Are toasters a meme? Why the hell do people buy them when you can just use a frying pan? It's actually faster and and more versatile since you can add butter. Why the hell do toasters even exist? Is it just a giant scam?

helps with multitasking i suppose. i've noticed that toasters dry out bread before it gets brown and that doing it in a pan keeps the bread moister though.

Before the toaster was made people just used "toaster racks," which I think were just metal grilles you placed on top of a pan so you can toast bread on it.

I remember reading the when the toaster was invented, people (particularly the English for some reason) were up in arms about how toasters yielded objectively inferior bread than the old-fashioned method.
So yes, toasters were once a meme but they won out.

The English absolutely would be the only ones impassioned and experienced enough by bread texture to be up in arms about toast quality.

These are the people who invented the "pringles sandwich" (a handful of pringles chips between two soft slices of bread), the "chip butty" (a handful of french fries, steak frites, or "chips" between two slices of buttered soft bread), and most relevantly, the "toast sandwich" (un-ironically, a piece of toast between two slices of soft bread).

Oh, I would totally expect the French, Italians, and Germanics to care about the ingredients, the baking conditions, the techniques used for each step in the bread-making process, as they are known for their famous quality breads.

England isn't about the bread quality like other parts of Europe, at least not in an everyday household sense. It's wonderbread there, too. That's why the "toasting" part is important to them, otherwise it's just dehydrated pre-sliced white bread, unless you come from a more culinarily-inclined household.

Yes they are a ridiculous meme, and I've never owned one. I can toast bread in a pan or the oven, and since someone gifted me a toaster oven, I can use that. I was against the toaster oven at first, because I have a small kitchen and didn't see the appeal in putting a small oven on my counter when I already have a perfectly good regular size oven. It has turned out to be useful for quickly making some garlic bread and reheating certain things. I gave away the instapot and crockpot I was gifted though.
