This is illegal in most countries including the United States, and while some shitty small businesses do it, McDonald's doesn't and is good at making sure their franchisees don't since it potentially opens them up to employee lawsuits for wage theft, and there are solid legal precedents where employers had to repay all the money they docked plus punitive damages and legal fees.

I would have believed you, but you went too far with inserting a major corporation (where every policy is double-checked by lawyers) and wrecked your credibility.

Retail is nowhere near as bad as fast food to be fair. Not that having worked at a McDonald's briefly when I was in high school inspired me as an adult to give fast food workers $20 tips or anything, but I definitely don't hassle them and even if one completely fucked up my order I'd just throw it out and forget about it.
I think it's kind of insane to behave otherwise if you're an adult with a decent career. No matter how disappointing a fast food experience might be you shouldn't lose sight of how you're walking out of there back into your comfy life and they're remaining inside right there in wagie hell, possibly even for years to come.

This would imply that unions can not be Communist on the basis that Communist movements were not strong during the Cold War. Again, you are somehow confusing unions with communism.
Unions are just groups of workers banding together to make sure they don't get fucked by their boss.
And I think that's something the restaurant industry really needs. I've worked in restaurants, and you get treated as less than human.

It's true. I think it would take a major shift in public opinion for it to happen. And it would be really difficult.
It could only work if every mcdonalds (or at least most mcdonalds in major cities) was picketed, and people actually respected the picket line, and boycotted the business.

People seem to have this belief that fast food jobs are only for teenagers, but in reality it's mostly desperate adults trying to feed their families.
People also assume it's easy to just develop skills, and get a better job if they don't like their current one. It's clearly not that easy. If trade school/university was free, or at least affordable on minimum wage, then I'd accept that argument.

How could they come back? The union bosses got greedy, fucked over their own workers anyway, and then Globalization came in and rekt them completely.
Now If they try to unionize a plant and institute “fair” wages, the factory closes down and moves to India, throwing everybody out of a job.
And it’s not even overseas. Far more jobs are lost to Tennessee than Taiwan. Pay some people in the countryside half the wages of a unionized shop in Ohio, and you’l have the entire town lining up at your front gate to apply for a job.

>> No.12468082

The reason they hate unions is they are in a very competitive field.
If they’re smart, all CEOs and top executives realize that their companies aren’t special. They sell widgets just like everyone else, and are subject to the same rules of supply, demand, profit and cost. If their widget costs $5 and their neighbor’s costs $6, they win. If theirs costs $5 and their competition has them at $4, they lose.
If Delta unionizes but American doesn’t, Delta’s fares have to go up drastically to cover increased employee pay. Suddenly they are now $100 more expensive on every ticket. Price conscious fliers who don’t give a fuck don’t book with them anymore. Instead they book American. Delta loses the price war, fails to capture billions in revenue and withers away. It’s happened repeatedly over the last century, and it will happen again.

I don't really buy this argument. Other first world countries, like Germany and Finland face the same threat from foreign competition yet still have incredibly strong unions.
For instance, did you know finland has no minimum wage? Yet even the lowest paid workers make more than the US minimum wage.
How?
Strong unions for basically every field.

If you are even remotely qualified for something, you will get hired right now.
Some places will even pay the cost of training you. I work in the HVAC industry, and they currently have a shortage of 100,000 jobs, which will turn into 500,000 jobs in five years as the old geezers start retiring en masse. Every major equipment maker has programs to help their dealers get techs HVAC certified on their dimes. Every large dealer in my area has partnerships with trade schools and technical colleges to sponsor HVAC classes and give out internships to grads who are graduating and do not have a gig. If you want to do HVAC shit, now’s the fucking time. Decent techs pull down six figures per year if they’re willing to put in the hours.

Surely there are people who grew up poor who are just as capable and ambitious. Yet they almost never seem to make it to ceo. In fact, it's so rare that when it does happen, forbes or some other site writes a "rags to riches" story about it.

could it be that succeeding in business is more about connections than skill?

Eh, germany manufactures tons of shit that could be made cheaper in china.
They make volkswagens as well as Mercedes. They make tables as well as wind turbines.
To claim they only manufacture goods that couldn't be made overseas would be wrong.
Also, part of the reason they are able to make goods of such high quality is the fact that they are heavily unionised. Their workers are looked after, and well trained. They also have a law requiring any large company to have the board of executives be made up of 50% lower wage workers. And this board determines pay for the ceo and executives.

So why can't the US do that?
It clearly works extremely well for other countries.

I didn't say there were no ceos who grew up poor. Just the overwhelming majority come from rich failies.
They got sent to private school, had tutors to make sure they could get into good universities.
They didn't have to work during university, so could focus on studying, and playing golf with other rich assholes (or as they call it "networking"), and if they did fuck up, their parents could just make a donation to the university to make any trouble go away.

Then once they graduate, they can either get a job with one of the assholes who went to their fraternity 30 years ago, or have their dad set them up with a cushy gig at one of his buddies firms.
Honestly, the whole system is fucked, and people need to realise it can be unfucked.
For one, by raising taxes on the rich to subsidise education/healthcare for everyone else, two massively increasing the penalties for tax evasion, and three, banning lobbying/political donations.

It's not rigged. The advantage you can't beat is the whole family thing, brothers and cousins make positions first if they're in close. Crazy, right? How business can in fact become a fucking oligarchy that practically owns societal consumption and ideas?

These dildos also have age and experience ahead of most by a hundred miles. That's their other advantage. Those few rags-to-bitches stories are just glamorized article pieces to promote journal/magazine circulation and promote loan-investment ventures as smart ideas for the working and middle class.
>could it be that succeeding in business is more about connections than skill?
depends really on the size of the business and whether or not it's an honest business, or something much more complex. Skill can get you pretty far if you have the wits to exercise it appropriately.

>Honestly, the whole system is fucked, and people need to realise it can be unfucked.
Nah, they make it work. If it hasn't been dismantled by now then one should argue that it is a VERY, VERY effective system. I mean, the government is filled with corruption at every turn as well, right? It might depend on how you define that corruption, for lack of a better word perhaps, but it still works for the people. You have to understand that; that it works for the people who care the most.

These systems satisfy the wants and needs of their consumers. It would all be different if the system 'wasn't' effective, it would repair and heal itself in such a way, by such people, that an immediate angle around that system wouldn't even be possible until as much time later. It's a very similar concept to Hydra (not the fucking Marvel icon).

But nah, everything you've been saying so far is pretty spot on. And what should scare you is to know that those kinds of rich kids with those kinds of connections and ease-of-access throughout life are present throughout any geographical area of the United States, even the poor ones. That last bit is a bit daft though. I do think though, that if you spent more time invested in looking into the function of those areas - modern/historic taxation, private and public education/healthcare funding, tax evasion/fraud, and lobbying/campaign funding - then you might be able to narrow down the specific problems in a system even more to a singular entity rather than the system as a whole, you know, attack the system where it's most important pieces are also its most vulnerable?

most restaurants, by default, will undercook a steak. your average joe blow boomer retard doesn't know what the donenesses actually mean, they'll order well-done and then bitch about how dry it is.
if you undercook their steak and they want it more done, you throw it back on the grill (or in the microwave if you're vindictive) and send it back out.
you can cook a steak more. you can't UNcook it, if it's overdone THEN you throw it out.

It's illegal in the UK, and pretty much all of Europe to give a bad reference. Instead all you can do is refuse to supply one.
In the US it seems to vary by state.
Generally it seems to be legal to give factual information (He was late x times, and formally warned about it on x date, etc), but if they say anything they cant back up/isn't copletely objective, it can count as defimation.
For instance if they used a word like "lazy", or "incompetent", you'd have a pretty solid lawsuit.

It's not illegal for employers to say negative things when asked for a reference, at least not in burgerland. It's just uncommon because the employee in question can turn around and sue the employer for damaging career prospects or whatever.

In my state it is. All a previous employer can do is confirm you worked for them and how long you worked for them. Anything else, positive or negative, is illegal.
