i'm relatively new so idk how the old challenges went; seems like people dislike the current host primarily b/c of his themes. i dont think his persona was a big deal, some people like that campy stuff from his early rounds
i think striking that balance between interest and accessibility. anything too difficult will result in low participation and anything too accessible is probably going to be boring. i think advertising prizes could offset some of that but again some people may not enter if they dont think they can beat the tryhards that prizes will attract; consolation prizes will likely attract trolls
open voting would be better for board interest since everyone can participate but you'll get trolls. closed voting likely makes non-participants feel excluded. the last few threads were super slow constantly dying or needing bumps unless people were arguing with each other

The themes were pretty bad, but people dislike him because he's new and had no clue how the challenge went in the past. There was a plethora of terrible decisions made, but even Hearts couldn't have made up for the lack of interest.

Also, virtually nobody even followed the basic rules this time, and the idiot running the challenge didn't do anything to enforce them. You might as well have just posted in the fucking cat blog at this point. This is why we're never going to have good /ck/ challenges ever again.
More than half the board are cooklet casuals who cry when the themes are too fun and the entries are too good. The current challenge host faggot is a big whiny baby too, and has no backbone, so he refuses to take any particular stand as far as enforcing rules or anything that might offend anyone. He keeps blubbering about how we need to be "inclusive."
Why do we need a lot of shit-tier submissions? We don't. I'd rather have just a handful of really good submissions. That's what was actually good about the old challenges - it was an actual challenge to best the other contributors, and with intriguing themes that really made you think and work for it, that made you reach out of the box.

I could really, really get behind something like that. Why not do a set of ingredients like a Chopped basket? It'll be a great way to coax creativity out onto the board.
People do best when they are really challenged, not left up to leisurely decide what to make. It would be fairly easy to do randomized selection; if we all came together to make a dump list of all the most common foods and sorted it into just a handful of categories (meats - plants - prepared foods), we could use a randomizer to pick numbers and assemble a challenge basket with, say, one meat, one prepared food, two veg, or one meat one veg and two prepared food, etc.

All you'd need to do this would be an excel sheet and some spare time...

>>12468214
A week is enough
Totem is alright, but I do not know if we really need a timestamp. It would be very difficult for someone to dig up an old picture of a dish that happens to fit the round's theme alongside the totem they have being using for the entire challenge.

>> No.12469218

>>12468025

I like the idea of a Chopped-style competition, and the thing about it is, we could make three of the ingredients fairly standard, while incorporating a "unique" basket item, like...
>pasta, celery, dried thyme, and... beef tongue!
>potatoes, orange juice, romaine lettuce, and... white chocolate!
>tomatoes, bacon, ramen noodles, and... mayonnaise!
Or, something along those lines. Do ingredients that people (generally) have already around the house, plus an ingredient you'd most likely have to purchase.
I have a feeling there's some samefagging amongst those of us who are throwing out ideas, so it's hard to tell how much interest we really have. Maybe somebody start a new thread for ideas and input?

My only (minor) issue was that I got my dish all plated once or twice and then forgot to make a timestamp, so I had one really nice photo and then a half-eaten time-stamped photo and then there is no guarantee which image the dish will be judged on if you submit both.
It's not that hard to write on a scrap of paper though.

If it comes down to it I think it should be obvious that the full presentation ought to be the judged one, but I can't make everyone judge fairly. I can only arbitrate where I can.

The biggest problem is not submissions anyway, but rather, votes and voting. I feel like vote spam and vote fraud used to be a massive issue in the OG challenges.
I wonder about doing a split judging where half the score is ratings from the thread, and the other half is ratings from your fellow competitors or a dedicated panel. Just to temper the consensus toward the more educated side.

As a past competitor, there should ALWAYS be timestamps and totems. It's an excellent way to prevent cheating. In past competitions, we really didn't have to worry much about cheating, because most people were really ethical about it, but I don't know about people who are here now. The participants could be the judging panel, just that they obviously couldn't vote on their own submissions. Then they're identity verified and have some real personal investment in the challenge.

I think it would be best to encourage if not require the vertical.

Submit the picture of the final dish in good light, good plating, to receive your judgement, but you should be posting pics of the process, at least a couple. You want to engage the audience and explain yourself.
Usually when I try to do a cookalong I take a picture of the ingredients at the beginning and then forget to take any pictures until the final fish, but any supporting pictures you can submit alongside your final would probably help your score.

I am not saying that we should get rid of it, Is just that I do not see the point, you would need to have a picture of a dish that fits the theme and with a totem.
But when you put it that way yeah, the hacker known as "4chin" may find a way to cheat

However, I would propose that competitors should be able to also submit a nicer picture with no timestamp in order to let people make the best pic they can. As long as the pretty picture and the timestamp picture do not show completely different dishes I see no problem. This would be specially nice when users want to show a close up of their dish without having to fit the timestamp in the frame
