Started drinking bourbon last month. Here are my power rankings (all are the standard variations):

1. Jim Beam
2. Jack Daniel's (it's marketed as "Tennessee Whiskey", but apparently it meets all the criteria to be counted as bourbon)
3. Evan Williams Black Label
4. Four Roses

I've found that Jim Beam is surprisingly smooth and dry compared to the others, almost like a sake. That's fitting, given that its parent company is Japanese (Suntory). Plus, it's reasonably priced (I consider a $1/shot or less after tax to be reasonable, which equates to any handle $16.90 or less after tax). You probably don't want to go too cheap, though, or else it's going to be something that smells like rubbing alcohol.

JD Rye is smooth with a good, strong maple oak taste that's easy to sip. It's got the taste of rye whiskey but the smoothness of a regular Jack Daniel's, it's also good because the rye takes away that sweetness that a regular JD bottle has so it goes with any occasion or any meal, I think it's way better than regular Jack Daniel's. Single Barrel Rye is also good, but for the price it's not really that much better, it's more a $40 whiskey than a $60 one. If you're a big Jack Daniel's fan then I'd recommend it, but even then JD Barrel Proof is the same price and that's got great flavor (as well as being over 100 proof).

Alcohol elitism is pretty irritating. You should drink what you like. While there is a minimum price point where it would be hard to make good alcohol it isn't automatically the case that cheap = bad or that expensive = good.

I get shit on for sometimes taking 2 cubes of ice with a decent whisky, don't give a fuck, have always drank it with a small glass of water to taste anyway and the ice is basically a sign that I'm going to take a long ass time with this drink.

Cask strength/proof or whatever is a weird one. It depends on whatever blend the distiller decides to release as their cask strength/proof product. I don't think you can generalise as different distilleries will maturate at different strengths depending on their process.

I have learned that a good metric for determining good spirits is not how well they sell worldwide, but how well they sell in the specific area where they are made.

Example: Johnnie Walker is the best-selling scotch internationally, but within Scotland itself, the best seller is Famous Grouse.

Had this problem before, nipped it in the bud:

Decide on
>a number of drinks a week and
>a number of drinks okay for each day of the week, separate from the week
that represents "current me agrees that'd drinking any more than this means I officially have a problem".

This number is by definition arbitrary, so pick one that makes sense for you.

Treat it as if you're always allowed to reach, but never allowed to cross, that number, unless the occasion is special, and special occasion rules are
>The special day is a unique event (holidays or "once-in-a-lifetime" stuff like funerals or weddings, not just 'Friday night going out' or whatever)
>You're aware it's a special day multiple weeks in advance and that your rules are okay to be ignored that day, and
>if you're at all unsure or even need to think about it being a special day, it's not special enough.

Write down your week and day limits, then set a phone reminder for 6 months from now to check your ok drink numbers and how you're doing. If you broke your lines, past you believes current you has a problem, and it's officially time to get help.

Never needed to get official help because I found just having a limit number I already agreed was my "I'd have a problem" line meant I kept better track of how much I was drinking, and ensured any problems I had could not get worse. Kept things in line quite nicely.

An old college friend drinks about a handle every weekend. He can't participate in social outings because he just gets shit-faced then passes out early, every time. He never finished college and instead works housing construction. At one point he had a serious girlfriend, but he lost her after too many drunken antics.

There have been numerous attempts to try to get him to stop drinking. He's been in treatment twice.

Is there any hope for this guy?

You have to, I think thinking of yourself as distinct entities here is what makes this work.

The issue I found with problem drinking is that you're an unreliable narrator and the goalposts move as your problem gets worse, because your standards for "it's not so bad" move along the way. Recording what you believe is the problem drinking line is today stakes the goalposts into the ground so if they move in the future, it's a big red flag because it's not family or someone unfamiliar with your situation, but past you (YOU!) set that line.

Example: You'd say
>"2 drinks on a random week-night would mean I have a problem"
today, but 12 months later, if you were asked, you'd say 3 was the new problem number (because you're drinking 2).

If you just stop and said
>"Hey, what did the past version of me (who isn't like the current version of me) think about this?

And remember, as if it's another entity,
>"He'd have thought future you is a fucking drunk with a problem",

and knowing that you'd agree with him if you weren't drinking as much as you were, at least for me, was enough to shake your confidence, get your shit together, pass on drinks when you need to, and fix your problem.
