I started making them that way since that's how I was first intoduced to the monte cristo. Honestly I prefer the style pan-fried with beaten egg though.

It's just a simple batter made with flour, baking powder (or you can use self-rising flour if you have it), salt, pepper, eggs, and water. You beat the eggs and water together and then add to the dry ingredients. You don't want the batter to be too thick or too thin. It should easily coat the sandwich, but not thickly. Use wooden skewers or toothpicks to hold the sandwich together while you batter and fry it.
Also, make sure you use swiss cheese.

I've been a monte Cristo fan for nearly 3 decades. First from bennigans, then from cheddars and most recently the boomerjacks incarnation. They're all battered and deep fried though, not like the French toast style of op (which I wouldn't mind trying if I see it available somewhere).
