Despite the term "Mid West" and its 13 miles of coastline on a fetid freshwater swamp, Indiana is not considered the West Coast.

But to answer your question in the proper sense, the answer is no. West Coast neglected their infrastructure for too long so only incorrigible cagers would want to live there by choice.

Indiana has tons of farm families so there's always access to great meat and produce for fair prices. Make the right friends and they get even better. If you find a restaurant supplied by a local butchery then you're likely in for a treat. Olive Garden and places like Chili's are still running strong. Late night food isn't a big thing outside of college towns and even then it's typically limited to pizza and the more rare late night fast food. Poke has been trending in Indy for a while now with some places opening about it. I don't think it'll last for long. People also love Puppy Chow (I think it's called Monkey food in some areas too) which is basically chex cereal, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. Fried pork tenderloin is allegedly a signature state food but I rarely see people order it. Home cooks in general are pretty bad. Go to any grocery store and you'll see parents loading up on soda and frozen/boxed meals. Despite that the population of bigger cities is large enough to be home to some great cooks with a variety of restaurants. Except for pasta. I haven't a decent Italian place as much as I've looked.

If you're stopping by Indianapolis for a meal try The Eagle for fried chicken, Kuma's Corner for burgers (or any burger joint there are a lot of great ones), Chatham Tap for wings, or Siam Square for Thai. Sub zero ice cream is a meme. Grab Subito for a weekday soup+sandwich lunch if you ever get the chance as it's the best lunch spot in the state. Even further probably

If you're near Indy, O'Reilly's pubs are great. They don't have their fish stew at this time, which was their best dish last year. Black Swan will have their blueberry beer ready in a month or two.

The sushi and Mexican places are pretty standard for the midwest. Decent, but not as good as the coasts or Texas. Go to Pizza King once for the trains. Indy has enough variety if you don't mind paying higher for more international faire, or carrying a gun in the ethnic places that serve the better food.

Outside of Indy, Bloomington and the Lafayette/ Valpo area are your best places to eat. Better Asian food in Bloomington, and more traditional American in Valpo.

Not that anon but I've lived 20 minutes east of Indy my entire life. Most of the great food can be found downtown or around the near north side. Virginia Ave in particular is pretty much a giant stretch of the best restaurants and bars in town.

Milktooth is worth the James Beard award it won and the owner's new restaurant Beholder is almost just as good, but if you want to try and catch a table on the weekend then good fucking luck. They break fire code all the time just with people waiting. There's a place called Love Handle on Massachusetts Ave with fantastic breakfast but its significantly less trafficked.

Like a lot of the upscale restaurants in Indy, Bluebeard does modern farmhouse cuisine, but they probably do it best now that Cerulean closed up shop. Tinker Street and Black Market both do the same kind of thing.

Rook is great for Asian food. Tlaolli, La Parada and Livery are all solid for Mexican. And enough of old Indianapolis remains that there's still a good handful of dive bars to collapse at.

St Elmo’s is another one I’ve missed but I’m told it’s kind of a meme too. I’ve had the cocktail sauce at Harry and Izzys though and that was fun in a weird, painful way.
Livery is legit and I’ve heard good things about Black Market too. Rook’s on my list since there seems to be a very weak oriental food scene

St Elmo's is decent. It's not completely a la carte so it's a bit cheaper than other decent steakhouses. San Diego has the potential to be a pretty nice city if they would just do the following:

1. Move the stupid airport out about 200 miles and build HSR from the new airport to downtown. Combine it with the NAS so muh national security isn't impacted. Redevelop the airport and NAS and turn them into something actually useful like mid to high rise mixed use development

2. Build out the trolley system about 3-4x the mileage that they have now and close the loop. Extend a line all the way to the San Ysidro crossing. Build a crossing to Point Loma from what is now the incredibly wasteful aviation handout (which would become high density mixed-use commercial/residential/retail)

3. Revise the "one parking space per unit" to "no parking spaces allowed" in what is currently the CBD and replace all streetside parking with PBLs

4. Raze the multi-lane freeways that gash up the city and build urban greenways for bicycles with commuter rail links underneath connecting San Diego to nearby urban areas

5. Get rid of the stupid golf course on coronado and turn it into a public green space

6. Raze Brown Field and turn it into a special economic zone with Mexican labor and American management (Mexicans would be eligible to replace American management if Americans are too lazy which they often are). Repurpose the existing fencing to maintain border controls for the US mainland while permitting free passage between the Brown Field Special Economic Zone and the Mexican mainland. Mexican workers would be eligible for US residency within 4 years of full time employment, this would also extend to their immediate family.

7. Ban white people. Just kidding. Or am I?

I grew up in South Bend and have since lived in Chicago for the past ten years. South Bend is essentially just an exurb of Chicago, so I never really considered it a part of Indiana. Growing up we never went south of South Bend into the state proper. Go like 30 miles south and the accent in the rest of the state is completely different than what we speak I’m the north. That’s where you get corn country and pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Indianapolis is like the most unremarkable mid-sized city in the whole country, it’s just.,. meh... absolutely nothing to write home about. I’m sure there’s a tiny handful of decent places to eat, but certainly nothing to brag about.

Up north in South Bend, it’s very Catholic, unlike the rest of the state, so we have a lot of Italian restaurants — a lot of buffet food, potlucks, catering, family food is polish, so crap like buttered noodles, over cooked green beans boiled, etc. The Italian food is hit or miss, very “Italian American” in style.

We recently just actually started gettting someone decent restaurants in South Bend due to all the recent investments, economic growth, and influence of Notre Dame. Indiana in general lags behind all other major foodie areas. The closest we have is Chicago, which rivals the coastal cities, but doesn’t have much impact in places like Indianapolis.

South Bend also happens to be near SWMI wine country and the fruit belt, which offers up nice produce in the summer and brings a lot of tourists from Chicago.

In general, food in Indiana is pretty shitty. Yeah we eat a lot of corn, but like someone else said most of what you see on the roads is seed corn for animals.

The state has tons of factory animal farms for pork and chicken. Not much of a small-scale, organic, artisanal farming scene whatsoever, it’s very limited.

Like I said grew up in South Bend right by the the Michigan border.

>> No.12282136

>>12282107
The last thing I’ll mention, and one of the roost redeeming features of living in Northern Indiana, which bleeds into SWMI, is the abundance of roadside stands where you just put your money in a lockbox and take what you paid for.

It’s always seasonal produce taken from someone’s personal garden. Offerings include: tomatoes, asparagus, rhubarb, persimmons, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, dill, apples, berries, squash, and I’m sure a bunch others I can’t think of now.

Right now is prime model season, you can find those on the roadside, but you better believe someone is carefully controlling them since they go for like $20 for a little paper bag full.
