Mukbang came about from Koreans studying away from home.
Meal times are culturally supposed to be shared with friends or family so some people started hosting "Mukbang" just to be social during meal time.

I'm not Korean but from an outside view it seems to me that most cultures outside of the West still hold strong family values especially around meal times.
