Never cared much for Talisker, then I started enjoying the flavour more and more. Now it's my go to for any occasion.

What's yours?

What are some staples of the different regions of scotland?
I had glenfiddich 12 and laphroaig 10 for the speyside and islay, respectively. What about high/lowland scotches?
Also, has anyone had glenfiddich 14 and/or 15? And what are your thoughts on them

>> No.12228744

>>12228337
Don't know much about lowland but for Highland go for Glenfarclas 12 or Oban 14. Springbank 10 for Campbel town of course. Talisker 10 for Island (people often confuse it for islay). Also keep in mind that all Speysides are technically Highland Whisky's but the reverse is not the same.

>> No.12229741

>>12228744
For lowland, friend swears up and down that Glenkinchie is amazing. Haven't had Springbank but I've had Glen Scotia and really loved how it really did taste like a mix of all regions, you get your smoke, spice and fruit taste. And it's pretty affordable to boot.

Talisker is spot on and I don't know any Island ones that are better

Saw it in the airport and was tempted to pick it up but it was just too high compared to some other deals being offered that I couldn't refuse. I'm travelling in a few months so maybe I'll luck out and pick it up or something else

>> No.12230895

Whats a good quality but slightly more affordable (under 40 dollars) scotch? As much as I like laphroiag and such i just cant pay upwards of 60 bucks plus a bottle when i go through it quick

>> No.12230973

Talisker is nice, not necessarily my favourite but I do like/have enjoyed it. Look for the 10yr or Storm if they are on offer/discount. A bit overrated @ £40 particularly the Skye which is the lightest of the bunch, but reasonable enough for around £25.
The 57° North, 18yr & Dark Storm (duty free 1L) are the more interesting ones but pricier :(

Peated, Port Charlotte.
Rye, Lot 40 or (if I can find it here) High West.
Bourbon, WT101.

Talisker is not really sweet, at least not the ones I've had, if anything it's more peppery/coastal/peat whilst being not quite as phenolic as Laphroaig. Sweet suggests to me sherry/bourbon/sauternes/madiera etc. which Talikser really isn't.

If you want a sweet whisky try Penderyn Madeira (non chill filtered/natural colour/46%) NAS but it's lethally smooth & knocks spots off some of the other entry level stuff @ £29!

Despite having bought a bunch of more expensive scotches, Macallan 12 is still the best scotch I have had.

Really like four roses small batch for bourbon.

>> No.12231907

>>12231805
Spot on for Penderyn, I had it and really enjoyed it especially since it didnt taste like a scotch or Irish whiskey. It has it's own flavours that I appreciate a lot compared to Japanese whiskies that just taste like scotch.

Talisker 10 for me initially was very briny and peppery but over time, I get some sort of light fruity sweet aftertaste? Not comparable to other whiskies known for their sweetness but it's hard to describe really. It's one of the few whiskies that I like it more every time I have it. Even when I put it aside and drink something else peaty, sweet or just a big sherry bomb and then come back to it a week or so later, it's just so damn good.

Which Macallan 12? I think there are the Sherry cask and the Double cask of which I've just had the sherry one. I've tried drinking it at least 10 times now to see if my taste changes with more exposure but it just hasn't. I just get some sherry notes on the taste and finish but that's it. Macallan sells at like 25% more compared to similar aged whiskies cause its Macallan but i get much more flavours from something like Glendronach 12. I know its all subjective but I just couldn't find myself ever enjoying that Macallan compared to how some others I know enjoy it

Some blends can be ok if you are on a budget & shop around for unusual or obscure ones, but paying £150 or £275 for blends seems odd to me. It tells you on the JW Green Label what they put in it, you can buy those actual bottles for the same or less cost, & yes I know there are skills involved in blending (masterblenders & whatnot).
