You know, I really quite like pic related.

The meme is that high-end JW are good whiskies but for the price you can do better. So what's the better option for something like this?
I know what I like and it's something a bit smokey, low iodine, mild burn.
What single malts or blends would I look at, in pic related's price range, would I look at that would actually blow blue label away?

This isn't a bait thread and I'm not saying that blue label is the epitome of whisky but I think it's pretty good and although I'm obviously paying for a huge marketing budget, I don't know what the alternatives that should be better are.

I used to be a JW fanboy until I realised basic Grouse was better than Blue Label
12yr Canadian Club is my favourite and I've tried a lot of expensive whiskies, Price just doesn't seem to correlate at all with taste

It's just a matter of not knowing single malts well.
The reason I bought blue label is that it was an option in a bar once and I tried a glass and liked it. I don't buy it regularly but from time to time, it's affordable as a treat.

>>12211229
>What's the closest other whisky you've tried that tastes like the Blue?
I'm going to sound like a meme....but green label.
The single malts I've tried all seemed to be massively one thing or another.
I did have a Suntory (just called Suntory, not Yamakazi or anything) which was an aged single malt that I liked.

>> No.12212580

Idk if you live in USA or not, but Costco legitimately has some really good scotch: both single malt and blended. They have a 27(?) year blend that tastes very close to JW blue imo.

Black Bottle costs $25 and tastes better then JW Blue. Even Glenfiddich 12 is more palateable then JW Blue plus Caol Ila 12 and Talisker 10 are less than half the price and are basically the principal malts in that blend.

lmao what the fuck were you smoking?

Grouse flavor is pure ass in comparison to blue label.

I'm not a huge blue label fan, especially for the price, but if you think grouse is better you're a lost cause.

It's not that blue label sucks, it's that yeah its expensive as fuck for marketing reasons. If you want a mix of smoke, sweet and spice then Glen Scotia is pretty good for a quarter of the price

>its expensive as fuck for marketing reasons
That's basically the point of this thread. Everyone always says in /ck/ whisky threads that you can do much better for the same price, or as good for less.

>Glen Scotia
Sadly not available around here. I'm limited to what's available in two big distributors because if not, it would probably be fake. Most things are available but Glen Scotia isn't.
Any other suggestions that I ought to look at?

people in my town like to make apple cider moonshine, it has nearly zero harsh alcohol taste but it fucks you up bigly. I should know better than to drink it by now but I can't turn it down. I am lucky to not be in jail because I get blackout drunk every time I drink it.

Can't say since I haven't had anything from the line but for little smoke, have you had Talisker or Bruichladdich? Both have some sweet and smoke. Talisker has a briny flavour that I have grown to love too. Both start at like a fifth of the price of blue label

Everything tastes disgusting to someone. I enjoy the taste of alcohol myself but hate wine's alcoholic taste. its too...burny and JUST Alcoholic tasting , don't enjoy it. Whiskey however is just the right level of burning/ smokey , good for sipping with a meal of thicc ribs and bread.

Hell I don't enjoy the feeling of being even tipsy, so I chug water and eat with every rare drink I have. I just like the taste

It's probably just distilled cider, apple brandy essentially.
Not much different to Slivovive say. You can get pretty high alcohol content without a lot of impurities. It's not uncommon to see it at 70% or so, sometimes as high as 80%. Obviously that's something you sip as an apartif or shoot to start a meal but fools will want to prove themselves by downing shot after shot.

It's all about what you actually like. These threads are all identical. A few nuggets of good advice but to find them you have to sift through a mountain of bullshit. If you like JW blue and can afford it, more power to you. Do I personally think there are better drams at the same price? Absolutely. I'm not above saying that I do enjoy $30 Monkey Shoulder. Nor am I ashamed of the bottle of Pappy Van Winkle that I have locked away for special occasions with the part 2 of my Arturo Fuente Twin Towers set. If you enjoy your drink and want to recommend it, do it. Just tired of the bullshit

Who the fuck is responsible for this Japanese whiskey popularity bullshit. I have had at least five different brands that were highly recommended and it just tastes like an average mild tasting scotch. Yamazaki 12 definitely has me lost since I've had numerous bartenders and liquor store owners saying they'll kill to get another bottle, I've had it and it's not that it's bad, it's just forgettable.

>> No.12221584

There's some suntory that I like, I had a single malt with heavy smoke that was amazing in a rusty nail. I'm not sure that's high praise for scotch but I did like it a lot.

I had a bottle of Hibiki and wasn't blown away by it, though the crystal it came in has come in very handy for holding mead that I buy bulk.

Apart from bait posts, I doubt anyone would object to saying drink what you like. It's just fun to talk about whiskey and share recommendations and experiences with different ones. I haven't had JW Blue but based on what OP said, I would recommend what I've experienced that matches it I feel.

Monkey Shoulder isnt cheap where I live and I personally didn't find it as good as I was expecting based on numerous recommendations for a nice sweet cheap whisky. For me on a nice sweet whisky with a touch of smoke, I'd go with Dalwhinnie. Nearly finished it and have to get another one soon
