I'm going to Ann Arbor for the weekend. Any good places to eat in or around there? Any food shops to check out and bring something back? What are some good local products (like wild rice in Minnesota)?

Angelo's: deep fried French toast. $9

Monahan’s Seafood Market: blackened mackerel with Thai chili sauce. $10

Zingerman’s Bakehouse: Hungarian apple strudel. $3

Frita Batidos: chorizo frita loco. $13

They also have an Indian place that does a nice goat curry, but I forget the name and the price.

I have no idea but it's relatively close to Detroit, and the Detroit area has great Middle Eastern and Greek food, for me. Coney places are also a specialty and great for some slop piggin'.

Detroit has some sketchy areas and some places you probably don't want to venture into without an entourage or a strap. However, like any other big city it has more public areas that are cool/things to do. There's the city part and then there's the projects, you know.

zingerman's has a cafe and a deli in the same block of 2-3 buildings. see if they have "enough already" bagels. Definitely the place to go if you want to bring back food souvenirs though they're pricey. Farmer's market might have something stuff, too (don't remember the hours this time of year, google it).

>>12199900
>They also have an Indian place that does a nice goat curry, but I forget the name and the price.
cardamom is pretty good on the north side of town

Lab is probably the best coffee place in town. Blue Tractor has solid BBQ. Ashley's has the best beer selection, but there are a bunch of other pretty comfy bars too. Totoro has the best japanese.

michigan tech is on the keweenaw peninsula, there's a lot of nice mountain biking in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. If you're from michigan and you're trying to get to isle royale national park you'll probably go through there. Not a bad place, but considering how far out of the way it is if you're not going to MTU, Isle Royale, or live nearby, there's not much reason to go.

Better yet, don’t go wandering. Have a destination and get there. No need to go exploring except in the heart of the city. Where there are lights and other people you will be fine. go to lan city noodles, fresh made noodles have a great texture - it's closer to ypsi though
blue nile is good, I rather like Ethiopian food (it's sorta similar to Indian)
if you can get over to ypsi, GO TO MA LOUS, I cannot stress enough how good their fried chicken is
check out the last word, cool bar styled like a speakeasy (expensive though)
jolly pumpkin has very good sours, grizzly peak and arbor brewing are good bars too
if you can get over to the western side of the city near stadium and liberty, I really really like star cafe, it's this small middle eastern place, if not Jerusalem garden is downtown and their hummus falafel pita is absolutely delicious
Chela's is my go to for Mexican food, but if you can get over to ypsi go to Miny's Mexican restaurant, they have fried corn quesadillas that are very very good

We were still underage, our car was behind the gate and we were already drunk. The last thing we wanted to do was get arrested walking down the road shit faced so we decided to hunker down in the woods and sleep. Wouldn’t be the first or last time we got stranded in the woods overnight. One evening we decided to climb hogback and when we got to the top the sun was starting to set. What we didn’t count on was the sun sets on the wrong side of the mountain for our descent and combined with the tree cover it quickly went pitch black when we were only about a quarter of the way down. This was before the days of smartphones mind you so we didn’t have anything to use as a flashlight and the trail up the mountain at a lot of points isn’t well marked except for some paint on tree trunks to follow which we quickly lost without any light. We ended up wandering in the woods lost as fuck until 4am when we finally stumbled across some campers who told us which direction we needed to go to find the highway and we lucked out when we got to the highway a guy we knew just happened to be driving by and recognized us. He gave us a ride back to the trail head where our car was. One of the more fucked nights of my time living in the UP.

Zingerman's is the best American/Southern around, expensive though and usually a wait. Both the Roadhouse and the Deli are good and honestly the best place to order from if you're looking for something to take home.

Other personal favorites other anons haven't covered:

* Tomukun Korean BBQ. Best Korean food in town, good banchan, great stirfries. You can order raw meat to cook at your table but the regular menu is good cheap and in large portions. I love the pork belly stirfries. Tomukun also runs a ramen shop next door but it's only mediocre ramen IMO.

* Cardamom. Best Indian place in town, best restaurant on North campus. It's not a buffet like everywhere else but their curries are great. (Don't bother ordering anything else for an entree.) I usually get the makhni. Not a bad place to go if you're a vegetarian fag like my sister, the paneer is better than the meat.

* Red Hawk bar and grill. Nice sports bar, great food, a bit Frenchified. This is where I take friends who just want something American. If you like chocolate order the Pot du Creme for dessert, my favorite dessert in all AA.

* Knight's steakhouse. It's an overpriced downtown steakhouse, but I like it and the food is always good. It's not in the same tier as your $100 a steak places, more like $30 for most entrees and I think it's usually better than the high end ones anyways.

If you like sushi I recommend Totoro's, but there's better sushi up in Novi and Canton and I wouldn't go to Michigan for sushi anyways. Don't go to Vinology or The Lunch Room, mediocre.

And on ice cream I like Blank Slate and Iorio's, but Stucchi's hires the prettiest servers.
