When you sharpen, use a edge-leading stroke.
When you strop, use a edge-trailing stroke.
...
When you hone, do you use a edge-leading or edge-trailing stroke? I don't know.

Use a sharpening stone like a fucking samurai. Those gay rods only hone a blade for a week, until it's as dull as you

Leading, with the gap-width of 2 pennies stacked. forward and back. I've tried quite a few of those gay rods, but nothing can beat a morning with a coffee and a your Naniwa 5000 to 400 grit whetstones. I could probably circumcise my newborn son in his sleep without waking him up, this shit is so quality

Honing and sharpening are different things

Using a honing steel only serves to re-align any parts of the blade that may have bent slightly from previous use. Butchers in particular use them when cutting through bone, which will bend the blade the most when force is applied. Honing does not remove material from the blade to create a new edge; that's what sharpening does. Stropping does even less, and basically just polishes the blade and removes debris, making it a bit smoother so it glides.

doesn't matter as long as you use a ceramic rod

edge trailing, when you start the blade edge should be closest to the hilt of the honing steel
