It's their regular barrel proof release.
Widely available, very good, and priced ~45-60$ depending where you get it.
Doesn't bear an age statement on the bottle, but press releases from WT have claimed it's a blend of 6,8,and 12 year old bourbons.
WT barrels at 115 proof instead of the usual 125, so you can get some interesting differences in their barrel proof releases vs those of most other bourbon distilleries.

I guess I've lived under a rock but where did all this Japanese whiskey obsession come from? I've had maybe 6 different ones and they just taste like a decent to good scotch and that's it... nothing unique or stand out, its just scotch whisky from Japan.

Not talking about this thread but talked to some liquor store owners and whisky drinking regulars at a place I go and they all swear up and down Yamazaki is their number one favourite. To me it seems like it's the same crowd that jizz over Buffalo Trace products (Blanton's, Weller, E.H Taylor, BTAC Collection). It's just about exclusivity. More often then not, the people who obsess over these products want to stunt and that's about it. Most often necking it down with a tumbler or, god forbid, ice.

There's nothing wrong with it per say, however these people masquerade as enthusiast while at the same time giving no attention to smell and taste, or at best, making it secondary to the effects of intoxication.

For the 30 year old Boomer, it's all about "smoothness" and status.

Eagle rare and Buffalo Trace single barrel store picks are great quality, cheap and available. I wouldn't recommend against any of the aforementioned whisky; if you see any of it for MSRP and want the experience then go for it. What's in the bottle just isn't worth 2x-3x MSRP like it's most commonly being sold for. Especially when you look at Eagle Rare and see that it's the oldest of all the core Buffalo Trace products with a 10 year age statement, still single barrel, and uses the same mashbill as all except Blanton's, with slightly more rye.

When you see people go around looking for E.H Taylor and jump at the chance to pay $80-$100 for it, yet right on the same shelves there's a whisky that's exactly the same, with exception to the rickhouse its aged in (which is within a couple miles of eachother), and one is double the age of the other at $55 for a half gallon, it's hard not to be amazed at the success of their marketing.

>where did all this Japanese whiskey obsession come from?
Back in the late 90s Japanese Whisky was a cheap alternative to single malt scotch, especially with stuff like Hanyu and Karuizawa which sold for decent prices because single malt wasn’t as big of a commodity and not many people took whisky outside of the West seriously, until people like Jim Murray came along and started shilling Yamazaki as well as Kavalan in Taiwan, Sullivan’s Cove in Australia and Amrut in India and now the prices for all those regions have skyrocketed to the point where all the older stocks are near gone and now you have to pay $70 for a 3 year old.
Whisky arguably was better when it was exclusive instead of inclusive, however markets in Canada. France, Switzerland and Germany aren’t too overpriced yet.

Most BTAC is good but the hassle to get it fucking sucks. Also the product itself isn’t really improving that much over time and the only reason the prices are so high is because of the street cred these dumbfucks get for wasting money on shit they won’t even really enjoy or likely even open.
But at least Four Roses and Wild Turkey haven’t gotten that bad.
>>12193802
I’ve tried a lot of BT and personally I’d only buy standard BT, Weller 107 (until the price goes up to $40) and maybe Handy or George T. Stagg if you can get either for MSRP. Eagle Rare 10 is honestly overrated and WLW is probably the most overhyped BTAC despite it losing out in blind tastings often with similar year Handy’s and GTS’s. BT in general has gotten a lot worse and don’t do a lot of innovative stuff anymore, which sucks because the old BT 12 was really nice as is the Barrel proofed White Dog.

I for sure think it's a bit overrated but everything in it's class has either went or been NAS or went up in price. Hell, I'd take McKenna, Weller 107, or Old Ezra 7 barrel strength all day over Eagle Rare but nothing good wants to stay at that $30 price point.

In PA, Macallan Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Double Cask 12 Year 80 Proof goes for 31.99$

Sorry, the one I was look at is priced for 375 mL, regular price for a full bottle is 59.99$, so yea, never-mind. There are still plenty of options to choose over Glenfiddich 12, unless you're looking in particular for that light, herbal, honey-suckle flavor scotch that it offers.

I'm not sure I would call it over-priced. Macallan 12 is one of my top 5 favorite whiskey's so far, and I've had around 30 different ones. I definitely feel like my money was more well-spent on the Macallan 12 than the Glenfiddich 12, and the Glenfiddich was cheaper.

This is cheap as hell in Canada and I pass it up all the time. I guess the grass is always greener, but I think you should enjoy the fact that Eagle Rare, Rittenhouse, Stagg Jr, and W.L. Weller products are probably way cheaper for you than they are for me.

With the possible exception of Weller 107, which on a blue moon shows up and is cheaper than the regular Special Reserve, and is also at a 30% discount. I have no idea how that happened, and bought all the bottles I could carry.

Usually when they really want to get rid of something that isn't selling they put absurd discounts on it so they can make room for something else, or a new shipment that's coming in.

>>12188876
Rittenhouse = old faithful, great Manhattans

Michters = never had any but heard outstanding reviews from pretty much everyone. Might be worth a try.

Crown Northern Harvest = pretty hot and flavorful. It doesn't live up to Jim Murray's glowing *cough*paid*cough* review about it, but it's still pretty good for the price.

Canadian Crown 100% Rye = I got a 750ml bottle for $12 on sale so didn't expect much. But it's surprisingly drinkable without any burn -- which could be a good or bad thing, depending on what you like in your rye.

Lot 40 = my current favorite. Mildly spicy and full flavored. Only been sipping neat so far. Caramel notes without the sweetness. Dry finish.

Whistlepig = The next step up. Probably will be the next rye I get once I finish off a few bottles.

Booker's Rye = Booker Noe's final project... I've never even come across one or, if I did, probably wouldn't pay the high prices associated with it, but here's to dreamin'.

I was able to try Glenfiddich 18 at a bar recently, and was amazed that the Glengoyne 12 had a very similar profile to it at a younger and much affordable age. Ardbeg 10 drier and quieter than the Uigeadail and an excellent choice for the cost. The peatiness and sweetness bridge together very nicely and it's got an outdoorsy taste compared to the dark, foody taste of the Uigeadail.

The only Laphraoig variants I've had were the select and quarter cask. I personally advise skipping Laphraoig select because it reminds me of an inferior 10 but the quarter cask may be a good choice for you if like blunt flavors and higher abv. The quarter cask wasn't bad but it was what made me realize that I need to be careful about NAS whisky because I always found the 10 to be a great pick.
