I just bought a can of these fucking beans at half-off, apparently they haven't sold well in Australia.
I looked at the four different varieties they had and picked the one that was lowest in sugar- the slow-cooked (it was still 9% sugar by weight).
Holy fuck are these things sweet, as in candy-type sweet. Beans are supposed to be savoury. What the fuck America, no wonder so many of you are so fucking fat, when even savoury foods taste like brown sugar.
Do you guys actually make anything that's not literally crammed with sugar?

i've been seeing more low sugar varieties of stuff. i think people are getting sick of it.

baked beans are a sweet thing though, usually meant to be a small side among others at a bbq or something. but there are plenty of canned beans without a ton of sugar i can find too.

Obviously I'm experiencing this from the point of view of someone that's used to beans in a tomato-based sauce that's fairly low in sugar. It just came as a shock, how sweet it was.
Not saying that Bush's are necessarily doing it wrong, just that I no more expected a sickly sweet profile than you might expect say, peanut butter to taste like cotton candy.
A couple of times a year in winter I make beans with pork belly, and give it a hint of sweetness using maple syrup or kecap manis, that turns out pretty good in general.

Seriously though most Americans think they are disgusting.

I'm more of a Van Camp's Pork and Beans guy. I could eat them cold from the can and drink the sauce.

Apocalypse when?

We have tons of plain beans in a can. Usually 2-3 brands of each kind of bean. Though there's breed of french bean I forget the name of that's uncommon canned here.

This isn't communist Russia. What you're looking at is Baked Beans, a sugary side-dish made in a ton of different styles and now dominated by one market on the shelves. British colonists that lived on the east coast cooked them with sweeteners like molasses and it spread.

Pork and beans is less used but is thin tomato sauce with pork fat, probably more like what you're used to.

Yeah, we have plenty of plain canned beans over here. Baked beans are normally seen as a savoury breakfast or lunch dish (served on toast, or in a jaffle).
I picked up the Bush's beans to experience the difference between Australian and US beans and was just shocked at how sweet the US beans were. I mean, a little sweetness is fine, but 40 grams of sugar a can just seems excessive.
Still, I know what they're like now, and why they're 1.25 dollarydoos a can.
