I wouldn't go to a restaurant where the audience didn't applaud a slip up heard by the entire place and just ignored the slip up (not that you've ever been out to a restaurant and payed). This new guy we just hired on the line jokes around a lot and it's kind of annoying because I'm autistic and am not usually paying attention so miss half the jokes and just feel awkward, but every time a server breaks a glass he yells out, "mazel tov!" and honestly doesn't get old. It's also an open kitchen so a good third of the restaurant can hear him as well.

I'll play devil's advocate.
The reason we give shit to people who fuck up is so that they and anyone watching have an incentive not to fuck up.
One alternative is to give sympathy which (according to this mindset) provides an incentive to fuck up so as to garner 'good' attention.
Another is to ignore it, in which case people won't care much about fucking up because it gets treated the same way as not fucking up, making being careful all the time an unnecessary expenditure of mental effort.

In reality; both parenting and managing requires that you balance all of the above and in a crowded social situation, all three reactions are likely to be present.

I guess it's somewhat related to why doctors and nurses tell jokes about death and disease in the breakroom all the time. We don't actually think the guy in room 6 who's dying of liver failure is funny. We call him Simpson to ease the pressure of watching a man die (and because he's yellowskinned). I think I saw that exact same joke used on this board a couple years ago in the al/ck/ threads actually.

In most cases, it's the restaurant themselves that encourages this behavior. In the place I worked, employees were encouraged to be the ones to start the clapping. It's mostly so customers don't think too much about it, the clapping makes everyone not dwell on the fact and get back to their meals. Basically, it's just a way to relieve tension for both the customers and the staff.
