12148188 No.12148188 [Reply] [Original]

These have come down in price a lot since they came out. They're almost the same price as a high-end conventional toaster oven. I'm thinking about picking one up as the weather warms up so I don't have to turn my apartment into a sauna. Anyone on /ck/ have one or is this just the NEET board where we complain about the price of tendies barely keeping pace with inflation?

1) why would you ever need it to do that?
and
2) even if you do have a use for that silly feature, why would you cuck the rest of the oven to get it? It's added complexity, added points of failure, and in the end it doesn't even work as well as something which costs a fraction of its price. It's paying more money for an objectively worse tool.

So a regular oven takes like half an hour to preheat and hours more to dissipate the heat. I usually start my AC around 3 or 4 pm from my phone, and it’s comfy all evening. If I had to use a full size oven for dinner, it would have to be like 50 degrees when I got home in order not to be roasting myself alive by the time dinner is ready

It's performance isn't as good as traditional models. It's less powerful. Its high-tech controls are less reliable. It's broiler heats unevenly. It lacks a rotisserie. It will not accommodate a 12" pizza. The convection fan is weak.

This is a great example of one of those appliances which sucks on a fundamental level, but is marketed because it has some kind of dubious "high tech feature".

Want a small oven? They're great. Get a Panasonic FlashXpress or a Breville Smart Oven.

While in theory that is of course absolutely correct I am not sure if at a toaster oven that is in this case SUCH a big risk, provided the thing really only has like thermo sensor and if cameras such that really ONLY can see the inside of the oven- and not for example a microphone hidden somewhere or so.

What about what its app has access to on your phone?

>>Sems like the most data you could harvest from that would be what kind of food the user cooked.
Think better. Even if we ignore the phone app entirely, it would also know:
-when you eat
-how often you eat
-how much you eat

and it likely can learn a lot more than that, especially if its inventors aren't morons. The camera can probably determine the light in the room the oven is located in, so it may know your schedule. It knows the temperature you keep your home (by checking its temp sensor when the oven has been off for hours). I wouldn't be surprised if it can use this information to calculate your approximate location based on daylight hours. All that may not sound like much but I bet it can correlate quite a lot of things off of that. there's no doubt in my mind it will nearly instantly figure out your gender, marital status, size of your household, and so on.

this thing has a microphone too, right?

I'm viewing it less from the angle of data security and more from the fact that you could just remotely turn on the device for an extended period of time by someone else and could possibly risk an electrical fire.
