Why hasn't agricultural science fixed blueberries yet?

>> No.12125160

Because you don't grow and or pick your own.

Buy in season and buy frozen otherwise. This is the same reason we don't buy grocery store tomatoes, dumdum.

Because the taste doesn't matter as long as they look good enough for people to buy them. Uniformity > taste

do you eat blueberries one at a time? like as a snack? that's kind of weird isn't it?

It’s because you buy genetically modified farmed ones. The ones which grow in forests taste awesome.

It's not tasting different if you genetically modify them in the scale you are probably referring to.

My grandma owned a u-pick blueberry farm that my family inherited. Before she died she taught me some of the maintenance it needs and hopefully I’ll be able to keep it going. They are some fine berries, I don’t really like them fresh, but I’m muffins, pies, and jam they really can’t be beat.

There’s nothing to fix. The problem is that you have the palate of a five-year-old. Maybe if you coated your fruits in sugar you would like them better FUCK

blueberries are an american thing, not enough interest. I mean in the 90s you paid enormous prices for chilean blueberries that were equally shit. It's getting better but god damn

I pick my own at this blueberry farm every year and sample the bush prior to picking because some will be sweeter than others. However, the commercial pickers just go through and pick all the underripe berries since the ripe ones will spoil or be damaged in shipping before they hit the shelves. So even in season, the berries you get from supermarkets will have ripened on the shelf, not the vine which means less sweetness.

I've noticed that the regular ones are always sour while the organic ones are always sweet.
The problem with organic ones is that they literally cost like $4 for a couple handfuls.

Blackberries are the same way, you know.
Rule of thumb is, the darker the berry, the sweeter it is.
The more sun the berry gets, the sweeter it is. That's one of the reasons that one bush will produce both sweet and tart berries. Those that develop deeper in the bush get less sun.
Too much rain/watering can also affect the flavor and texture of the berry.
