I work for a (very) small company with a targeted interest in compostables/biodegradables and the bags supermarkets in my country are charging (initially free for the changeover, now 15c and some are 25c for the thicker film wall bags) enough money for them to be almost 85% profit on each bag, accounting for the custom print runs by the containerloads.

They were going to try charging a whole buck for the bags before the changeover happened.

They would have to be made from untreated paper, which doesn't carry a lot of weight without collapsing which would make people start buying less. Biodegradable plastic isn't really biodegradable. It disintegrates into microscopic pieces of plastic, which is just as bad.

I got caught stealing soda with a water cup once. It was so humiliating that I've never done anything along those lines since.
