Thoughts on wild Turkey 81?

>> No.12056829

we don't talk about the turkey no more

I'm young but I don't understand the appeal of whisky. Tastes like shit to me senpai, even if I mix with coke. Rum is much nicer.

Absolute garbage. 101 is where its at

>> No.12058337

Isnt it just 101 watered down?

>> No.12058393

101 with less burnv which you could accomplish by just putting 101 on ice. Either way its a good "cheap" bourbon that won't make you hate yourself. If you're just starting on bourbon though I'd go with Evan Williams instead because it's cheaper.

WT101 and EW BiB are the only acceptable sub-$40 whiskies.

How old are you? I tried wild Turkey when I was 18 and hated it. Now I'm 22 and it's one of my favorite cheap liquors. I'd still say I prefer rum though.
I also used to hate beer.

Old Grand-Dad 114 heavily outclasses both in terms of bourbon.
There's a shitton of great sub-$40 bottles if you know where to shop, though. You can acquire stuff like Laphroaig 10 and Redbreast 12 for under $40 if you know where to look.

The average straight bourbon is significantly better than your average scotch or average Irish whiskey because of the law which stipulates what can and cannot be sold as straight bourbon.
$17 can get you 1.75 L of Evan Williams Black Label, a perfectly delicious bourbon which is pleasant to sip neat.
Sipping scotches and Irish whiskeys usually don't start appearing until around the $40 mark, for 0.75 L, not 1.75 L.

WT 101 and Rye are much better

Mostly a scotch drinker but yeah this is true for the most part. Any other good bourbon recommendations for sipping neat? I typically like highland scotch whiskies and want to branch out some more

Evan is a pretty standard mash bill bourbon. Wild Turkey 101 and Knob Creek are some nice, reasonably priced options with reasonably standard mash bills. Wild Turkey 101 advertises itself as a high rye bourbon but it's not. Knob Creek's smoked maple bourbon is an exceptionally lovely dessert dram which is still bourbon-like instead of being liqueur-like and cloying.
Old Grand-Dad 114 is THE high rye bourbon to start out with if you can find it. That's the good fucking shit right there.
Maker's Mark is the obvious introduction to wheated bourbons, which substitute wheat for rye in the mash bill and are much mellower and softer than standard bourbons. You'll find the wood really shines through in something like a Maker's Mark where there's no rye spice to mask the wood.
If you don't like any of these, bourbon's just not your drink, but I'm sure you'll find something here to your liking, and then you'll probably want to explore the more expensive options in that style in the future.

Also, if you ever want to start an infinity blend, those Knob Creek bottles are excellent for that IMO. They have durable, long-lasting synthetic corks which produce a serious seal with a real loud pop to it when you uncork it. They're the best-sealing whiskey bottles I've encountered.

If you can't find Old Grand-Dad 114, Bonded Old Grand-Dad and Bulleit bourbon would be other good, reasonably-priced choices for an example of high rye content bourbon.

It isnt. Elijah Craig, Old Granddad, Rittenhouse Rye, Pappy van Winkle, Four Roses Small batch etc. are excellent.
