Kids don't have fully developed taste buds so some flavors either come off as too strong or too bland

>> No.11993751

>>11993719
Not being developed yet. Children are usually given "kids" varieties and flavors which have more sugar or salts added to enhance a certain flavor while masking others.

That's why a lot of younger kids (>10) don't like un-sauced vegetables, fruits vs. fruit snacks or juices, or prefer a chicken nugget as opposed to grilled chicken.

When it comes to pickiness it's usually something that can be overcome with time... Like getting older.

And add burgers to that list, since it was only fairly recently that I actually started eating them.

Kids have very sensitive tongues because they're retarded and put shit in their mouth. The tongue is nature's way to make the retard spit it out instead of swallowing poison and dying. This should be overcome as they grow up as their tongue develops, and hopefully the parents aid the process by giving them real food that they can learn to like.

It's the opposite. Kids have immaculate taste buds. They're picky because flavors are obnoxiously loud for them. You care less as an adult because you've had time to wear your tongue down and get used to flavors to where you don't notice them as much anymore.

I don't remember hating anything specifically, I was as straight a french fries and octodogs -kids as could be, despite my whole family (except mother side grandpa) being excellent cooks. Anything greener than a steamed carrot was eww, wont touch.

Many kids seem to dislike the taste of clorphyl; cucumbers was one of the last things I learned to tolerate. My cousin on the other hand would chomp straight at the end. I on the other hand couldn't get enough bologna or buttermilk. To combat the pickiness, kids also have weird obsession foods.

Kids have sensitive taste buds, but you can't just give them nuggets because it's harder to break that shit.
My parents had a rule that I had to try a meal three times before I could say that I didn't like it. And they encouraged me to say what it was about the meal that I didn't like, so we could figure out meals that we all would enjoy. And not just like "it's gross", but like "this vegetable is too bitter" They both used to be chefs before they had me, and liked to experiment with dishes, and my mom, especially, was patient enough to listen. So, I usually ended up liking something they made the next time they would make it, and as a result, there were few foods that I wouldn't eat as I got older.

My cousins on the other hand, are still picky as fuck to this day, and we're the same age. My aunt and uncle would only ever give them pizza, nuggets, and mac and cheese.

I was a pretty adventurous eater when I was a kid. I can’t really re ember anything I hated. I really didn’t like spaghetti and meat sauce/balls, or most pasta dishes, until I stated cooking them myself. We ate spaghetti and meat sauce a lot growing up because it’s quick and cheap but it would be jarred sauce ladled over a pile of unseasoned/overcooked spaghetti. The jarred sauce always tasted too sweet to me even as a kid and I really disliked eating it. It was t until I learned to make my own sauce and finish the pasta in it that I realized how delicious it can be. That cherry tomato pan sauce from Kenji for example is simple and fucking delicious.

Tomato sauce. I hated Tomato sauce as a kid.
And then I as I got older, I snapped and thought "wait, this is pathetic, harboring resentment towards fucking sauce" and just started eating it. And with that, any real picky eating habits just died as well. Cooking and eating fine food is lovely.

I'd say it's a combination of parents not cooking, and introducing kids to foods either not quick enough or too quick. Toddlers are notoriously picky eaters because if something doesn't have the right texture or consistency, I guess their toddler brains just throw an upset that they're going to die.

This, I wouldn't trust a person who claims their parents never beat them.

Because that is the only way young kids learn. Not just to not grow as Eric Cartman", with "coddling" mentioned, but also morale the rules of social interaction on the most basic level. The key is to be consistent and reasonable.

Making one eat vomit out of assumption is kind of extreme though. The thing is, was he consistent? As in "you finish of your damn plate", did you know it would be coming or was it some mad fit out of nowhere. This probably also happens to every parent who still uses the whip once or twice but as said, repeatedly it is abuse.

This was me too. I don't remember what was the first food that snapped me, but I made it a conscios effort to learn to tolerate everything. Basically, I got tired of being a picky.

If I had to guess, it was probably this borscht inspired thing prepared by first semester catering students (we are speaking about 16yo trade schoolers here). It looked like vomit but the broth was just right, one of the best school meals ever.

Meanwhile, many other kids did this eww, eww bad routine simply because of the appearance and because wasn't made by our trusted mess lady. Fucking loudly at that, they all should have deserved a paddling.

Asparagus is a good name for a cat, read the T.S. Eliot poem on the naming of cats.

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Had an ex, she was basically a fucking 9 year old in a 23 year old's body. Anyway, she was a "daddy's girl" growing up and always just cuted her way out of everything. Don't get me wrong, she was good at it too. But growing up she never had to clean her plate, never had to finish her vegetables, etc. As a result, she grew up only really eating the things that (good) parents try to feed their kids in moderation. She wound up an extremely picky eater, and wouldn't eat anything she didn't already enjoy. The couple of times I convinced her to try something I made she enjoyed it, but it took at least half an hour of prodding to get her to try anything new.

Anyway, moral of the story is a lot of children don't get forced to try new foods and therefore can't enjoy new things. Incidentally this works with other experiences.

You spell the "kn" part for sure, I think the u is closer to u than o, if that makes any sense. English orthography is a mess, especially the vovels are way too fluid and the conconant clusters are used pretty inconsistently too, though they have some logic in them.

I used to be a picky eater with parents that could barely cook to save themselves.

Started working as a cook at 16 and discovered how amazing it is to always have access to delicious food. Worked in kitchens ever since then and haven't snobbed a flavor ever.

Hated eggs, because the texture threw me off. Hated seafood (even as an adult, I still don't really like fish, but I'm definitely not a picky eater in any other way, and I'm always willing to try it again if someone has gone to the trouble of preparing it well)

Was off mushrooms for a few years, because I sat in on a dissection class when I was about 5, and I thought the gills of sliced mushrooms looked like fish ribs, and it really threw me off. Before that I loved mushrooms, and it took me a while to get past it. Now I love them again.)

Interesting fact -- the aversion to fish has nothing to do with the bones. I just can't stand that fish-taste. Salmon is the worst, but sometimes I can tolerate something like a snapper or a halibut.

I still gag from mushroom texture, but I love the taste. Is this a curse?

I was not a picky eater and would eat anything as a kid because my parents were decent cooks and were careful to never make me aware of the concept that kids do not like those foods, so I grew up liking brussel sprouts and broccoli and asparagus.

Never particularly picky, but at some point in my life I was awakened to the sublimity of well prepared cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts etc. which were probably the closest to "don't want to eat this" as a kid.
Honourable mentions to olives and spinach. Delicious.

Olives and Onions

When I was around 4-5 or something I refused to eat anything but pasta, meatballs and carrots
It loosened up later in life, of course. I got really skinny (could see ribs and all). I guess some kids have a phase and taste buds develop.

I used to like sweet stuff as a kid, but hated these. Now as an adult i dislike sweet things (as a general rule, obviously not in this case) but love these things. I wish there were ones at the store that were more spicey.

Also, seafood. Didnt like it growing up, love it now.

Try enoki in a soup or stew. The texture is different and the flavor is mild, but they're good in any meat based broth.

The only foods i didnt like as a kid were Mushrooms and avocados
i still dont like them, which is annoying as mushrooms are in heaps of dishes. is there any way to change that and make myself actually enjoy them both?

>> No.12005900

Try eating mushrooms in an 'unhealthy' way (fried in lots of butter/oil/grease with plenty of salt/seasoning and your favorite meats/veggies). If you still don't like them, you probably never will. Otherwise you might grow around to it. For me, mushrooms seem to mostly soak up flavor. Avocados are pretty hit or miss though, even if you give them the right amount of lemon juice and salt you still might end up with a fucked avocado.

My parents are shitty cooks literally every food I hated as a kid I realized was only because they don't know how to make it.

For example I used to only eat burgers out, never at home. Everyone said I was picky but it's because they were buying this frozen fake meat bullshit that tastes like rubber with fake cheese.

I get a job buy some ground beef and deli cheese and Wala I prefer home cooked burgers now.

Now apply this same shit to 90% of foods.

A lot of people who don't grow up in fish heavy societies don't like to eat fish, so that's not so bad. But, my aunt used to pitch a fit if anyone else at the table wanted to eat seafood of any kind. That would piss me off.
