He’s not wrong. Why don’t waiters and waitresses jus apply at other places? I’m sure they’d get hired on.
>inb4 I make more on tips on a busy weekend that’s you make in two weeks
That’s bullshit. I’ve worked good service and that is simply not true.

Yeah, you're government minimum $2.14/hour. Now show us the $1,000+ in crumpled bills you've made in the last 2 weeks. Faggot. Half the people on this board have been servers. We know the income potential, especially if given the right shifts. I cleared 7k/month serving at a high end restaurant. My actual paycheck was like $20.

>Why don’t waiters and waitresses jus apply at other places?

lol. Of course we do... but the people who end up as career waiters do so by choice. The amount of untaxed tips we can earn is more than most starting engineers with a college degree.

It's actually one of the best paying jobs/careers for people who don't have any formal education or skills.

Career waiter here. The only real limitation with that career crack (aside from becoming less attractive over time if you're a female) is that a lot of places where money is exchanged need to see proof of income, tax returns, that sort of thing.

So, if you are not good with money, then it's not the career for you. By that, I mean you need to be able to save money and not finance anything. Also, you can probably kiss getting a house via conventional means goodbye. I've heard of one guy that put down a 60% downpayment on a house and got accepted, but that's it.

Of course, if you're actually reporting your tips, then whatever. I've never known anyone that did. Honestly, that would be a huge headache to keep track of how much in my pocket came from where.

For the record, I have a degree in computer science but found serving to be enjoyable. I like the place, like the people, and the money is fine. I usually work 2 week days for 6 hours, then 12 hours on Friday and Saturday. It's around $1,200-1,800 a week but varies depending on the season and local schools being in sessions.

as an engineer with two masters degrees, this is why I hate fucking unskilled, self entitled labor who think they deserve to make as much money as someone who has a real education and does real work.

here's your tip. handing people food is not a fucking career, much less one you should be "proud" of. It's a shit job anyone that's not retarded can do.

FoH is a low level rat race. They do nothing but bitch about getting the best shifts and how much money they're making, and if I didn't get tipped out most of the servers would make more than me working a few hours a night when I put in over 40 as a lead line cook. It's a disgusting system, but is easier for cute-ish young-ish girls than stripping. Nonetheless, until the system is changed you're an asshole if you don't tip (and not tipping isn't doing anything to change the system).

Entitlement aside, sometimes people just enjoy their work.

My best friend is a janitor. He cleans shit off the bathroom walls in a middle school. You know what he laments? That one day his back won't be able to handle the job anymore. He loves being able to just pop in his earbuds and not a single person says a word to him for 8 hours. He says it's his "zen" time away from a stressful home life. And that's a real job, real work, that the world needs done. So is food prep and food service. While specific demand varies by social class, the need exists all the same.

Some days I wish I had his job. But my wife would cut off my balls if I took a 40% pay cut.

I work literally 5 hours a week to make that money and in my free time i cook, read, take trips. A few times a month a do a consulting job that pays anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on what i'm hired to do. I am also a janitor, it's honestly one of the more enjoyable jobs I've ever had, and because of my specific type of janitorial work, it pays the bills. I'm not going to get rich off of it. But I was able to get my own place and get a vehicle. Anybody that scoffs at you when you say you work in janitorial, goes back to their cubicle and dies a little more inside. I get to talk to great people, they really appreciate the work you do when you do a good job, and you can mix up your day anyway you like so it doesn't get monotonous. If it wasn't such a stigma in Western culture, the custodial business wouldn't be starving for help. We don't even interview most people. the service industry is kicking and screaming to not take away their tipping culture. bosses dont have to pay their staff, and girls can get paid well for just being a girl. Their excuse is that "we'd have tuh raise food prices!! is that what you want!!??" which is total bullshit. going out to eat is plenty expensive, they wouldnt HAVE to raise anything. Even if they did raise the prices on everything, Id still accept it. Im on the side that tipping is wrong now. It just encourages owners to hire people they hardly pay, and the staff can try to hide their cash tips and get themselves in trouble if someone wants to narc on them to the IRS. The whole thing is actually bad for customers too because you are encouraged to tip more and more all the time, youre even expected to tip a small amount for shitty service. If you dont tip knowing all this, you will get shit service if you ever go back to this place. its all around a load of bullshit, but how do we end the institution of tipping?

This is a hard question to answer. Restaurants that special in dining-in won't even offer you the ability to get your own drink or food, unless it's a buffet. Though the buffet thing is a real gray area, as well, because you still have a server bring you your drinks and stuff

Fast food place like McDonalds have zero expectation of a tip since it's not specialized as a dine-in restaurant, although it does have seating. Some fast food restaurants will have you take a number and go sit down and they'll bring you your food, but you don't tip for that (and it's rare to find a place like that).

So basically just "fancy" restaurants, and you can't get away without doing the server's job yourself. You certaintly don't HAVE to tip, either. Especially if you're never going back there. You don't have to worry about them spitting in your food if you have no intention of returning.
