You need a very hot metal plate to toast bread on, but no problem, metal heats up quickly in the microwave which is why you don't put it in, you'll burn yourself. Sparks fly when you have wrinkled conductors like foil where it can arc, don't do that.

The problem is the bottom of your bread will steam. What you need is a perforated pan or wire sheet to go underneath your toast. Have fun.

Really?
I thought it was all metal that sparked in the wave.

Sure, Oster for instance makes a grill rack for a microwave that wont spark so you can use that to make toast, there's a grill mode for it. I only bought the thing a couple weeks ago, it's from Oster and comes with all kinds of neat stuff. It cost like $70 and is a 1k watter so it cooks stuff mega fast.
Your post makes me want to try that out just to see if it works.
