Sorry, misinformed Vegans. Restrictive diets that force you to eat only one type of food are never good for you.

> Long term vegetarian diet changes human DNA raising risk of cancer and heart disease

But it has the knock-on effect of boosting the production of arachidonic acid, which is linked to inflammatory disease and cancer. When coupled with a diet high in vegetable oils - such as sunflower oil - the mutated gene quickly turns fatty acids into dangerous arachidonic acid.

The finding may help explain previous research which found vegetarian populations are nearly 40 per cent more likely to suffer colorectal cancer than meat eaters, a finding that has puzzled doctors because eating red meat is known to raise the risk.

That's a pretty intense and unnecessary study, a smaller, age distributed study for ~20 years would probably give you all the necessary data.
But you are right in that there is a lot of trouble with studying diets, especially the long term effects of restricted diets. Not least of which is that dietary studies are often self reported. Another problem is, how do you determine exclusion for a diet? If a lifelong vegan gets drunk as fuck and eats a double cheeseburger, does that exclude them from the study, or is it small enough to be considered an outlier? If they regularly eat food which they wrongly consider to be vegan because it has egg products or milk products, does that exclude them?

But as we know, most 'veganist' ideology isn't about health or environmental best practice, but rather an internal purity complex. I'm basically ovo-lacto vegetarian and eat a high number of vegan meals, but I do it because it's cheap and I have the time to adequately cook beans and shit. I certainly don't think it makes me more spiritually 'clean' than the average diet.

most people who are vegan don't do it for longevity, they just do it because they get emotional about animals and they use statistics like this as evidence that it's "the superior way of living"

But honestly, is it better to die when you're 85 and blind with arthritic limbs and blood clots forming every day, or would you rather die in your mid sixties having enjoyed every day fully? looks cool. i've been vegan for just under two decades and have recently been eating fish a few times a year at special occasions.

still have all my teeth, full head of hair, smooth skin, great eyesight, and tons of energy with a good bmi. i eat a varied diet and cook everyday, being mindful of complete proteins and vitamin and mineral sources.

diet doesn't do everything. in blue zones one of the biggest factors is sense of worth and community. i have a great support system and almost no stress, fulfilling work, make more money than i can spend, regularly exercise, and do things i enjoy very much. if you pay even a little attention to your diet and just eat food that isn't processed or factory farmed, you'll thank yourself later.
