The days of having to wade through 20 different IPAs to find the 6 good ones is long gone. The West Cost market over-saturated itself and all the shittier start up breweries were pruned. The problem now is that you have to wade through a dozen shitty hazy/juicy IPAs just to find the couple classic West Coast IPAs on the menu, but now everyone is about being as local as possible so there's a good chance that at least one of them is going to be some mediocre homebrewer shit that started a brewery less than a year ago. Nobody just drinks IPAs. I drink all the styles you mentioned regularly (well, good porters are under represented in the US, though I probably cook with them more than drink them). Doesn't change the fact that half the time if I go out I want to start with a solid classic West Coast IPA, and now even the old school SD breweries are jumping on this stupid hazy trend and it's just kind of like going to the movie theater in the summer and instead of seeing Jurassic Park or Terminator 2 its nothing but capeshit as far as the eye can see; some people seem to enjoy it, but it's been taken too far and has drowned out anything of quality.

nah, there is nothing really like the original IPAs

They weren't good beers by modern standards. Back then people didn't know what yeast or bacteria was or sanitation. So all beers became sour if stored for too long. Brewers noted that hops delay the souring of beer (they didn't realize it was the antibacterial properties). So in order to create beers that would last the long journey and back from a place that had no brewing infrastructure, the IPA was developed. Note unlike modern IPA these were intentionally made for aging, but not because aging made them better, just that less hoppy beers couldn't handle the aging as well, but the extra hops made the beer too expensive to be wasted on an every day fresh beer on the homefront

TLDR: the original IPAs are not something we should be seeking because the conditions that caused them to make sense no longer exist and modern IPA is much better

I'm so fucking sick of this spin. They waste more hops without getting decent IBUs, which in a balanced beer is matched by a solid malt backbone, so what you consider "tasty" is completely subjective, and I consider more complex beers more tasty. West Coast and East Coast IPAs are just as aromatic - West Coast is more likely to dry hop - but the NE style usually smells like a girly drink.

Somebody finally said it. I truly believe that the reason so many people seem to hate IPAs is that they don't understand that you need to drink them fresh (I'm looking at you, flyovers). Even after 2-3 weeks the flavor changes drastically, and the intricacies just fall flat. If you can find something like pic related that was bottled less than a month earlier I'd highly recommend it; it will be mind blowing. He is just a guy that had a traumatic childhood in Minnesota that he blames on white people rather than his parents for some reason and now hates the upper midwest with delusional fervor. He has spent a lot of time building up layers of fake things describing the midwest and it seems like he may actually believe some of it at this point. Like if you weren't used to seeing his posts and complied the stuff he says it would genuinely be pretty funny in an absurdist sort of way if he didn't act so seriously

Minnesota is actually the best of the flyover states. Maybe not the best beer, but the people aren't as retarded as the surrounding areas. Just saying.

how long have you guys been at this?

I decided to try and expand my palate, read 100 pages ons night into randy moshers tasting beer and tried one, but I couldn't get any aromatic or flavor associations to appear

I tried it on westmalle dubbel and brewdog jackhammer, only had associations after I resorted to review reading

You have to have both tried a lot of flavours outside of beer, and experience how they present in beer to be able to describe any associations well.

Ever tried Devil's Purse Kolsch? It's not bad out of a can but a lot of bars around me have it on tap and it's amazing. I've been to Köln and it tastes very similar to the Kolsch they serve there. Very refreshing beverage

Maybe, they'd have to design ones to let in more air though.

It's much more advantageous to have beer in a can as it's more susceptible to sunstrike plus certain styles are very sensitive to oxidation.

I really like Fresh Squeezed from Deschutes and Citrus Mistress from Hop Valley. Those are usually my go-tos for IPAs nowadays when I'm buying from the store.
Both are citrusy but not overkill. Very smooth for me.
