I can't really find any good sources saying that's what happens. It mostly seems to be from weight loss sites and people saying that's why they haven't lost weight yet. It doesn't really sound plausible and seems like it might be what overweight people tell each other about why they haven't lost any weight while dieting.

It should be easy enough to test. Just don't eat for a day or two and see if you've lost weight.

Try it for yourself. Weigh yourself before bed and then in the morning and you'll see a difference.

I mean, fluid retention is real. But I'm pretty sure that it's a result of eating massive amounts of salt in your diet rather than losing weight. It was how they did the fat scenes in that abomination calling itself an Oldboy remake. Actual actor is pretty /fit/ but he loaded so much sodium in his diet that he ballooned up from all the fluid his body was holding onto and it makes him look a bit schlubby (if you don't look at his face and ignore the muscles on his arms). I think he gained and lost something like 40 pounds in a matter of weeks during filming.

The only thing I could find that was related was a doctor saying that some fat does turn into water before being flushed out by the body, but 80% of fat loss is actually from it turning into carbon dioxide and being exhaled through the lungs. So maybe some fat loss doesn't seem as apparent until the body flushes out the extra water, but it's not enough to actually make you gain weight. Anything else is just people repeating some unknown source and no scientific study saying that you gain weight before losing it due to water retention.

Not at all. When you cut calories below maintenance level, your body first burns glycogen which is rouhly 4/5ths water by weight, so the first weight you lose is mostly water. Glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles, not in fat cells. You have to burn through the glycogen first, and only then will your body start burning substantial amounts of fat. You need to stick to the diet until you are 10-15 lbs below your target weight. When you quit the weight loss diet and go onto your permanent maintenance diet, your body will quickly replenish its stores of glycogen (together with 4x as much water), and you will wind up at the right weight.

/fit/ is Broscience: The Board. Everyone recycles the classic memes "8-12 reps bro" and "you NEED 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight bro" without being familiar with ANY of the recent research (meaning published within the last 10 years) done into hypertrophy, if they're familiar with any at all.

The thing is, even though broscience is demonstrably wrong, it doesn't really matter because gaining muscle is extremely simple: get protein, lift heavy shit, increase weight of heavy shit, repeat. And as long as you repeat, you're basically guaranteed gains. If you want an extra 5% or 10%, then the details make a difference, but only if you want that extra 5%.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Rep ranges alone have almost zero effect on "body type." The only effect, controlling for volume, is that low rep ranges (about 5 or less) elicit a bit less hypertrophy while increasing strength more. That's it. 8-12 doesn't make any difference to anything.

This is the red pill:

1. This is true: check Lyle Mcdolands commentary on the "woosh" effect. This is more accurate for females than males, but it absolutely exists within the realm of scientific literature.

2. I didn't read the replies, but ill just say this:
Calories in / Calories out hypothesis is true, however there are a variety of lifestyle factors, dietary intake, and general lifestyle factors that can skew the hypothesis.

More specifically:
Circadian entrainment
Inflammatory foods
Adequate sleep

These three things can skew the calories in / calories out model for better or worse.

If you are looking for deeper information google Bill (william) Lagakos.
