You guys seem to know your shit, but wanted to make a different thread-what should i be eating in hong kong? Walking around the food looks great, but its pretty overwhelming with all the options/shit i’ve never really seen before. Should i try congee?

Of all the possible new dishes to try, rice porridge would be pretty low on my list unless there was a spot that was known for being incredibly good.

Given that few folks around here will have made the trip, I'd suggest reverse engineering it. There's a lot of Cantonese cuisine there, but given that it's been an international hub for centuries means the food is incredibly diverse. Try searching for popular restaurants, famous foods and dishes, and then look for spots in the area where you're staying that serve them. If you know anybody in the area, have co-workers there, or are traveling with any English speakers familiar with it, see if they can guide you through some menus or make any suggestions.

Congee a bland shit.
I really recommend the little stalls (pic) where they sell organ meat, fucking tasty, boring shits here will moan about muh hygiene while they cry into their McFillet o Diahorrea though.

Man Kee Noodle is great and As You Like Cantonese hotpot both in Jordan. Go into one of the late night cafe places in Wan Chai and just ask them to serve something they like, tends to be good and cheap. There are also a lot of very good bakeries everywhere in HK.

Great fresh seafood in Sai Kung and Lama Island too.

Goose restaurant. That's something you won't be able to get hardly anywhere else. There's a few good ones.

If you like peking duck, it's next level.

I also highly recommend looking for pigeon, totally unlike the sky rats you'd think of. That's another hong kong delicacy, which is better than duck, and you won't find it hardly anywhere else.

I've never been to Hong Kong, but congee is literally the ching chong version of oatmeal - i.e. poverty horse feed. That's like visiting America for the first time and making a list of fast food places to try... Wait, maybe /ck/ isn't the best place to ask for advice about some things.

Also go to Tsuen Wan for the speciality roast goose which is gloriously fatty and delicious. Go after lunch rush for a better deal and get a full spread for the proper experience (pic is a cheap and cheerful place I went with some of my students after a hike).
There's a steakhouse called Alto in Wan Chai that has amazing steaks that are reasonable if you go at certain times, and amazing views with hookah pipes on the roof.
There is also excellent Japanese food in most areas, ive had genuinely god-tier ramen in Po Lam.

TRY THE SOUPS. handmade noodles with beef and shrooms. Holy fuck is so fucking delicious. Ask the spicy one, it doesn't burn and gives that punch to the flavor oh my God.
