Why the FUCK hasn't anyone told me about cold brew coffee before? I thought it would be shit since coffee seems taboo not being hot, but this shit has a richer flavor than normal brewed coffee. Bought some bottles at the store and it's like liquid crack, the only downside is that it's pricey as fuck at $4 - 5 a bottle.

Not at the Sprouts right next to my house. They only had shit like nitro brew coffee cans, Chameleon, Stumptowns, etc.

I'm afraid to order them over Amazon because they treat bottles like shit and will most likely break in transit.

if you have a french press, just make it yourself. it's easy.
>use a high coffee to water ratio
>grind coarse
>add to press
>add room temp water
>plunge
some debate on the next step:
>store in the fridge for a day
>store room temperature for a day
I'd say store room temp for a day while steeping, then pour into a container and refrigerate after it's done steeping.
when you're ready to drink, just dilute with some water.
apparently it's easier on the stomach because you don't have some of the oils that are released when you use hot water.

Used to manage a store that sold these things. Entire deliveries went out of date so often that we ended up clearing the entire shelf in favor of fucking protein shakes of all things (which don't sell much, but at least they sold). Not sure what they do now, but I can say that I have not seen one of those bottles in months in any store I've been to. Tried each variety way back when, and it just tasted like normal refrigerated coffee. Vanilla and Fig was sort of okay. Cocoa and Honey barely had a taste.

Might as well just grab a $1 coffee from a gas station coffee bar and keep it in your car during the winter. Same fucking effect.

I have one of these takeya cold brew makers. You just use whatever ground coffee you like and stick it in the fridge overnight. When it’s done you have a picher of cold brew concentrate you mix with water or milk to your desired strength. It’s a lot cheaper and you can switch the coffee flavor up. They’re less than $20 on Amazon.

>> No.11726185

You're supposed to dilute cold brew? I wonder if thats why I didn't like the batch that I made previously

>> No.11726243

>>11726185
Yes, if you’re steeping it overnight it’s concentrated and needs to be diluted . Also use a very coarse grind to avoid bitterness. Also if you’re straining it through cheesecloth or something it will get bitter if you squeeze it out too hard. I used to use that method until I got the cold brew pitcher and the pitcher is much easier.

You're supposed to use 2 tbsp ground coffee beans : 1 cup of water for a normal ratio, so I'd say up it to anywhere from 4-6:1.
Your safest bet is doing 6 tbsp : 1 cup because the more coffee, the better extraction in cold water, and you can always dilute later.

Yes friend this is a cold brew thread.
For regular brewing, I have been using a french press for while now and I do 15 grams to 250ml of water. Better than any instant/commercial crap but I feel there is large room for improvement. It is probably the grind but I'm stuck with a grinder that I suspect can't grind coarse enough for a french press

>> No.11732346

>>11730386
To answer the question you have to understand how cold brew is made. Because you're not using hot water, the extraction process needs 1) more time and 2) a higher solute concentration with longer exposure.
The french press is nice because it keeps the coffee submerged under the water so all the grounds come into contact with the water adequately and can give off their oils (flavors).
Cold brew "machines" that claim to create a cup of cold brew in 25 minutes or whatever are a sham because the coffee needs almost a day to fully extract.
Otherwise, all cold brew machines operate the same way as a french press would. So if you have a french press, just use it and save yourself the trouble of buying another tool.

That's not really true. Cold Extraction doesn't reach temps that the acidic/bitter compounds convert or release from the beans. Which is one of the big reasons why there are so many different hot extraction techniques to try to rapidly get the good flavors out with as little of the unwanted ones.
