French and Italian roasts were invented to improve the taste of robusta (and more recently, shitty arabica) coffees. Time went on and a practice based on necessity became a cultural preference. Supposedly, as rising global climate affects the coffee belt in the future, better arabica coffee will become increasingly rare. Robusta blends and dark roasts will dominate even more than they do now.

I'm not an armchair coffee growing expert by any means, however, it makes me wonder if climate issues will only push ideal growing regions further north. I wonder if a lot of this talk is merely prepping consumers for some kind of justifiable price hikes that have more to due with profitability of commercial growing, rather than possibility of growing. Agriculture in general seems to be a heavily manipulated industry. Is not market manipulation of agriculture the cause of many historical and current economic crises? I'm too stupid to have answers. Anyway, it's probably safe to bet that excessively rich and greedy people made your coffee taste like shit.

Good beans are usually medium to light roast, though sometimes darker.

Thought so - simply the wrong coffee for a french press, it extracts too much of the oils and bitter compounds of this roast.
I'm not the biggest fan of dark roasts too but they are OK when made with a proper Espresso machine.
