Mulled wine. Hot beer (german beer works well because it's not some crazy hop bomb like most american beers these days). Hot orange spiced mead.

i tried "gluhwein" the other day and it was terrible. i expected it to be like a spicy cider but it was just bitter chemical. tasted ok on the tip of my tongue but burned on the way down

might just be because i cant stand the taste of any alcohol, though

In summer, rakia is usually served ice cold, while in winter it's served "cooked" (Croatian: kuhana, Serbian: kuvana or grejana, Bulgarian: гpeянa (greyana), rakia (also called Šumadija tea in Serbia). Rakia is heated and sweetened with honey or sugar, with added spices. Heated in large kettles, it is often offered to visitors to various open-air festivities, especially in winter. It is similar to mulled wine, as weaker brands of rakia are used (or stronger ones diluted with water).

I'll back up that anon and mention I'm also American and have never heard of a hot toddy before. It might be more of a European thing. American known drinks are things like screwdrivers, white russians, irish coffee, and margaritas, and even then half of the bartenders will secretly prefer you just ordered a beer instead so they don't have to look up your fancy drink on their plastic drink making reference sheet.

Eurofag here. I've never even heard of hot toddy before. Decided to mix some tea with whiskey because I drink lots of tea and lots of whiskey, and the combination sounds delicious. Only found of "hot toddy" is a thing because I got hit by a huge whiff of alcohol after pouring the hot tea on the liquid gold and getting worried my precious alcohol just evaporated and running off to google to get some science behind it.

That's your genetic memory as a European at work obviously. Same reason why as an American I instinctually know to consume large amounts of corn based soft drinks to maintain the layer of blubber required for surviving harsh New England winters.

finding good glühwein is very hard,
you best option is glühmost( most = cider) and punch is also good.
if you are in austria/germany always go for the little stands and not the big onew with variety, they all thaste chemical
