There is a time and place for a fine cognac, sure. After a nice, long dinner, or to celebrate something. Otherwise, it's just so out of place. Don't get me wrong, it's a great drink (I usually enjoy Hine antique XO,) but it just seems so damned affectatious if you drink it with friends.

Actually, what separates Uigeadail from most of the heavily peated Islay single malts is its complexity; it's far from a one-note smoke bomb with sweet dried fruit, toffee and sherry notes.
It's also, IMO, a lovely kind of smoke flavor and odor, far from yucky, ashy cigarette odor. Different strokes.

Very tasty.
Makes excellent mixed drinks, but also tastes great straight or on ice.
Doesn’t have the “oily” texture some gins like beefeater have.
Not too much citrus taste.
Way more flavour complexity than cheaper gins such as Pinnacle, Seagrams, etc. as well as more flavour complexity than some other high end gins such as Bombay Saphire etc.
I also like Hendricks, but feel Bluecoat is a better all around gin.
I haven’t tried the barrel aged version, because I feel gin shouldn’t be aged in wood.

You're a complete pleb if you think this. Gin is one of the most diverse spirits because it only has to be 51% juniper. You can have gin like beefeater that is purely juniper, or ones like hendrick's that has a variety of botanical infusions. It's not like whiskey or vodka where pretty much the only difference is the grain used to make the alcohol (which makes a very minor taste difference).

Wow. You've tried three, different whiskies? That's a lot. That's so many different whiskies you've tried. I've only ever tried one whiskey, so I'm not an expert like you are.

Face it, you're a tastelet. Just because you can't tell the difference between a medium-rare prime ribeye and a McDonald's cheeseburger doesn't mean that all beef tastes the same. Go back to your British pine liquor.

I remember getting some girl's name wrong and laughing my ass off when she corrected me, then somehow I ended up passing out in a bathroom stall, then my buddy carried me to our room and I basically slept and didn't eat anything for the next 24 hours. >> No.11712433

The best gin and tonic you can make with traditional techniques uses gin that you've stored in your freezer and tonic water poured from a fresh bottle that you've kept in ice water (if you really must, use tonic water that has merely been refrigerated, but keep it in the coldest part of your fridge - the part that accidentally freezes the lettuce from time to time). By "fresh bottle" I don't just mean unopened, I mean recently purchased. Plasic bottles lose their carbonation at an alarming rate, and smaller bottles lose carbonation faster than larger ones. Twenty-ounce bottles can lose an appreciable amount of carbonation in a month at room temperature. If you buy tonic water in glass bottles or cans - both of which are gas-impermeable - storage time isn't important.

>> No.11712441

>>11712433Before you make the drink, you must decide what glassware to serve in. for my G&Ts I typically choose a champpagne flute (and no ice), but I am always using force carbonation. In this nonforce scenario, the champagne glass feels wrong, and it's best just to serve the drink on the rocks in a standard highball glass. You will add 1 3/4 ounces of gin and 3 1/4 ounces of tonic water to the glass to make a 5-ounce drink. You can measure the gin with a jigger, but don't measure the tonic water that way - jiggering will cause too much carbonation loss. Instead, before you make your drink measure 5 ounces of water into the glass and note where the water level, or wash line, is. Try free-pouring water into the glass to that same level by eye and then measure afterward how accurate you were. After a couple attempts you will likely be getting to within a quarter-ounce or better every time. You can also try to learn where the wash line for 1 3/4 ounces is in your glass so you can free-pour the gin, but I'd just use a jigger instead. Now you are ready to make the drink.

>> No.11712458

>>11712441
Several minutes before drink time, make sure your glass is in the freezer getting cold. Cut your lime into quarters, of which you will need one per drink. At drink time, pull the glass and gin out of the freezer and pour 1 3/4 ounces of gin into the glass before you pour in the tonic. Next, tilt your glass to a 45-degree angle and slowly pour the ice-cold tonic water into the glass. As you pour, slowly raise the glass to vertical and stop pouring when you have reached the 5-ounce wash line you memorised earlier. The order of operations is important. You want the two ingredients to mix thoroughly without any bubble-liberating activities like stirring. Pouring the tonic into the gin mixes better than pouring the gin into the tonic. Tonic water is denser than gin (even gin at freezer temperature), so the tonic will sink through the gin. Also, there is more tonic in the recipe than gin, and when mixing two liquids you'll mix more efficiently if you add the larger volume of liquid to the smaller one. As a bonus, adding gin to the glass first will melt any errant ice crystals on the inside of the glass - crystals that would become bubble nucleation sites and cause copious foaming if the tonic hit them.
Next, squeeze as much juice as you'd like into the drink from a quarter of a lime. Adding lime before tonic would help the drink mix better, but lime juice contains bubble nucleation sites and bubble-stabilizing surfactants that would wreak havoc with the tonic's carbonation if it were added earlier.

>> No.11712462

>>11712458
Then add freezer-cold ice - not tempered ice. Don't drop the ice into the drink like a Neanderthal. Gently slide it in using a bar spoon. It's important that you add the ice last; if it goes into the glass before the liquids, it will promote foaming as the tonic is poured and will present a barrier to mixing. Added at the end, the ice *promotes* mixing. If you use ice directly out of your freezer, it will add very little additional dilution. The ice cubes will crack from thermal shock, but that's ok in this application. Drop the lime quarter into the top of the glass if you like that sort of thing. If you dropped the lime directly into the liquid, it would create constant bubble nucleation, but in our on-the-rocks scenario the lime will sit just above the drink, leaving bubbles unharmed and lending a nice aroma as the glass is raised to the lips.

alcohol-brainlet here with very little experience when it comes to drinking (I've only tried various beers and rums). Could you guys recommend something for sipping on when it is cold? It gets pretty cold in winter where I live (Canada) and my apartment gets chilly too.

Alcohol doesn't actually warm you up.
You /feel/ warmer, but that is because the increased blood flow brings warm blood from your core out to your limbs.
This is no bueno if you're actually freezing since you're just sapping your warmth out into the cold air and cooling your core down which will kill you dead quicker.

For shitposting indoors however I'd recommend a nice brandy.
If you've already got rum lying around you can try making a hot toddy for extra warmth.

This is just for at home, my apt gets quite cold (16-18 degs C) and I bundle up accordingly with a blanket etc but I'm not at risk of freezing to death.

>nice brandy
Any recs? I'm lazy so I'd prefer something I can just drink on its own at room temperature.

That being said a hot toddy sounds pretty dank. I already like rum. Do you have any recommendations for a hot toddy recipe? I'm really big on lemon/lime and ginger flavors.

>> No.11712944

>>11712727
There's really no wrong way to make a hot toddy; booze and hot water and some lemon juice. Throw in whichever spices you think would be nice.
Round these parts we do it with a mug of black tea instead of just water. Recommend brewing the tea stronger than usual since the rum thins out out a fair bit.

Can't help you on brandy tho. I usually just get the bottom shelf D'Eaubonne for mixing. I'll swig it neat too, it's not harsh or anything but there's smoother stuff out there.
Maybe spring for an Armagnac if you want to tread yourself (it's Cognac's less famous sister brandy so it can sometimes be cheaper)
If you want to be lazy but still have a nice warming cocktail at the ready I can recommend B&B/Brandy and Benedictine Liqueur. Sweet, woody, herbal. Perfect for sipping. Pricey tho.
