What is your favorite whiskey?

Lately I have been drinking a lot of pic related, but last night I had a shot of Jack and it was incredible. Forgot how much I liked the stuff.

So what is your go-to?

>Uigeadail vs. Corryvreckan
This tends to be a rather heated debate in whisky circles for good reason, as they're both great. They're also both quite different from Ardbeg 10.
I think of Uigeadail as the more refined gentleman of the two, supplying a more complex, enchanting blend of flavors, and Corryvereckan as a caveman bashing your tastebuds with stronger flavors but less complexity.
I don't find that Uigeadail's sweetness, smokiness, saltiness and citrus notes become congested, I find they stand well on their own.

It does have less complexity as far as fewer types of flavour, but it does have a lot of complexity within its smokiness. It's like you can taste the usual campfire smell, but there's also ashiness, very dark roasted coffee, and crispy burnt corners on food as well.

I don't have a favorite whiskey. I did, however, enjoy a Four Roses small batch. You have to consider that being small batch probably means a bottle you get today is going to have some variation compared to what I had years ago.

You drink. You drink more. You drink more and more. A ghost haunts the halls of your mind. The ghost whispers, "You will have a horrible life." You chase it away with drink.

You wake up, thirsty, afraid. Your phone rings and you wont look at it. It could be your boss or your mother. They are worried about you.

You grab your knees close. You can't look out the window. You sit down and have breakfast with your ghost. You wrestle and pleed with it. A few hours later you have the courage to make a trip to the liquor store.

The clerk is friendly, but his cheeriness stabs and grates you. You twist in your shoes, snatch your bag and squeeze its handle. You covet the brown paper talisman, you examine its fullness like a handful of gold.

And you drink. And you drink more. And you drink more and more.

For scotch, I just can't justify spending $60+ on a bottle any more, so I keep going back to Laphroiag 10 & Ardbeg 10... Lore and Uigeadail are excellent though. For a sherried speyside, I can always depend on aberlour 12 yr. I'm also open to suggestions

You might want to try a few drops of room temp water next time. Cold generally deadens your senses. If you find a whisky is too aggressive, or the alcohol is a little too hot for you, etc., adding just a few drops of water (I mean like a half or full teaspoon, not much) can tame it a little without deadening your senses like ice would. The 12 year old, while not as complex and refined, is the better deal as one can find budding notes in the simple sweetness as contrasted with the bitterness of one's own life, much like with chocolate. It certainly costs less than the upkeep of a taste for the older ones. The wild brashness is refreshing, it's a sensory overload that, while it can be bratty and annoying, makes you crave more. I also love the smell, it's something you just don't get from the older ones. I can't count the number of times I've stuck my finger in and swirled it around just to get a good whiff and a little taste before I dig in.

There are more occasions for them, it's not so formal. I like them sitting on the couch, playing vidya, on a hike, out around the pool, in the garage tinkering with the car. Call me a weeb, but I find the japanese 12 year olds to be much more mannered and sophisticated than their feisty scottish cousins. Not that I'd ever turn either down, usually I like to go back and forth between the two all night.

Also, apparently sulphur can be used in the process of making Sauternes:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauternes_(wine)
>One of these techniques involved taking a candle (known as a "brimstone candle") with its wick dipped in the sulphur and burned in the barrel that the wine will be fermenting in. This would leave a presence of sulphur in the barrel that the wine would slowly interact with as it was fermenting. Being an anti-microbial agent, sulphur stuns the yeast that stimulates fermentation, eventually bringing it to a halt with high levels of sugars still in the wine.

I actually have a bottle of that sitting right next to me. It's definitely bottom shelf, but the best among the bottom shelf.

Lately I’ve been using Eagle Rare 10 year for shots, and I’m a fan of Angel’s Envy for sipping.

I just got a bottle of Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style 115 proof for Christmas, and it’s pretty good. Whenever I travel, I try to get a bottle of a local bourbon to bring back. I’ve had lots of bourbons, and they’re generally good as long as you don’t buy bottom shelf that you haven’t had good recommendations on.

I like Irish whisky, but all I’ve had is Jameson.

I don’t drink much Canadian whiskey, but a few years ago I got a bottle of Crown Royal Harvest Rye for Christmas that is one of my favorite whiskeys. I love rye whiskey in general.

I don’t drink scotch, it takes a while to get used to and I have too much bourbon to justify buying more whiskey. If I’m gifted a bottle, I’ll give it another shot. I tried Dewar’s White Label and wasn’t a fan.

I don’t drink much, so my liquor cabinet is getting a bit glutted.

I was ona walk near home and found tons of empty airplane bottles in a ditch. Seems like one of my neighbors is a closet alcoholic.

my local liquor store has pallets of those things for super cheap (cheaper than buying a proper bottle)

I'd be ashamed to buy one, even getting one on an airplane skeeves me out, but I can see why people might buy them if they cost what they do

Are there any particular brands to try out the differences between Scotch and Irish whiskey? I've tasted Bourbon a few times, and I'm a little put off.

Can't wait to nip out of this tonight. Their port finished whisky is delightful.

You'd be shittrashed and close to death before you got an idea of regional styles of scotch. Crash course: scotch comes in blended, single malt, and single malt with an age statement of at least 10 years. Blended isn't representative of scotch and single malts are so unique that two different age statements from the same distillery are often more different than other whisky from the same region. Most recs in this thread are good places to start. The Macallan 12 won't disappoint but doesn't go into weird territory.

Good Irish tends to be hard to find, I just stick to whatever is cheaper than Jameson because it tastes better.

Is whiskey/scotch supposed to be sweet? I bought Talisker 10 as my first try and it's a bit too sweet

>> No.11670580

>>11670423
Some is more caramelized ranging into bitterness and others are dry as a bone. Talisker is just sweet. When you get into more smoke and peat, you'll want some of that sweetness back to balance the fire.

GlenGooly Blue Label... of course

For bourbon easily available in the UK then its Woodford. Had some imports from specialist sites and found them overpriced for the quality (Weller, Noahs Mill, Old Grand Dad) compared to Woodford.

Buffalo Trace is only 40% over here too so tastes bland after trying Weller.

When's the next batch coming out? I've always wanted a distillers edition but my timing is so shit. I wasted some fuel looking for Lagavulin DE but I found an Oban DE instead so it wasn't a total loss.
