Lagavulin 16, woodford reserve rye, knob creek, high west double rye. A friend buys and sells whiskeys as a hobby, he said he would put together a bunch of sample bottles of stuff from his collection.

I love vikings as much as the next guy but as general advice not only to you but the rest of you fags. Do not buy NAS unless you have a good reason to. Just looking at new releases, the number of age statements become fewer apart and more meme stories and bottles (such as HP) emerges since that is apparently what sells. Could've gotten a 18 yo HP for roughly 50% of the price the catch being that it was an independent release sans the glas engravings etc. There is a reason why some people hold Lagavulin 16 as the gold standard for scotch.
>>11661062
Even Port Ellen and Ardnahoe? Just having a laugh mate. I'd look at the 15 yo Bowmore if you are into sherry finishes but for comparing the standard releases the 12 ought to be superior.
Got myself some CS Glenallachie and Linkwood, moscatel and sauternes finishes. Really looking forward to comparing the latter to Glenmorangie Nectar D'or. Also pic related.

>> No.11661134

I actually didn't know Ardnahoe was open.
I don't count Port Ellen because they're closed, and the idea of tasting every distillery that ever was isn't really a goal I can reach. Going for current 8 active distilleries, plus Ardnahoe, I guess, when the product makes it's way to my region.

apparently Ellen will be reopening soon anyway, so I can wait on that one.

200+ dollars for a whisky that's a blend? And not even a very good blend. The green label JW is objectively their best as it's blends of all single malts.
Basically the blue is just really flat and boring and absolutely should not cost as much as it does for what you get. You pay for the name with the blue label and to show off that you're classy or whatever for drinking it.

Dad got me a bottle of henry mckenna 10yr bib. I had told him how much I liked it, so he grabbed me a bottle at his local liquor store. Wife got me a bottle of black saddle bourbon. It's decent. Ethanol on the nose, but the usual rich vanilla comes out after some rest, maybe a little citrus too. Taste is butter, vanilla, sharp oak spice. Has some heat for only 90 proof. Black peppery spice on the back end. Nice finish, but the overall taste is pretty underwhelming. It'll be a good sipper over the next couple weeks, don't think I'll buy it again though. She did well, considering she doesn't know bourbon from tequila.
There's one more bottle for me under the tree, wrapped cylinder. Looks like a scotch. We'll see what it is in a couple days (one of my gifts for her got shipped late, so I wanted to wait to open my other bottle until hers came in). When you first start sipping it you'll taste a lot of alcohol and it will burn. Was looking through the thread, and saw some anons mention that Bufallo Trace is bad or shilled too much. I've had it before and really liked it. Not all good bourbon is something you will like. Anything universally shilled is usually Maker's Mark tier or drinkable but not exceptional. It's best to make a bunch of expensive mistakes and come to discover what you like, it's cheaper than an afternoon at a whiskey library.

BT has a list passed around several local liquor stores explaining that they didn't forsee the surge in popularity in bourbon, and several of thier brands will be in limited supply.
If what they claim is true or not, I can't personally say. I live close to the bourbon trail, and plan on hitting up some distilleries and festivals this year so I might find out. A few of the local stores and distributors around the immediate area still have promotional events and auctions, but sadly I didn't get to attend, and was told it was pretty much like every year.
As for recommendations I'm not a good one to ask, I've had some very good bourbons over the years, but choose not to buy them over a mid grade bottle. I can tell you that Pappy family reserve is great, but I only had one glass. I can recommend a good bottle to buy that I've bought, but it won't be as expensive.

Some swear by drinking it neat or on the rocks, adding ice can make it too cold to get all the notes, but sometimes whisky is too strong you need to take the edge off it a bit. I suggest adding a splash of water to dilute it a bit, so it doesn't overpower your senses and you can enjoy it.

just don't waste it as a mixer.
