Get a little post overlooking the most interesting part of your apartment (ie window) they love that shit. Couple of toys and some catnip on the scratching post keeps them using it each time and is a good tool to train them with drugs.
They also enjoy picking when to get attention, mine don't mind when I pet them but some really prefer having that sorta control over interaction. Depends on the cat.
Never yell or hit them, they're cats and don't know right and wrong, instead be patient and train them using online resources.

He also told them that the boy was only allergic to cats. I should have looked into blood allergy tests and how they give false positives. He's not allergic to any animals, but is indeed severely allergic to weeds. I was able to get him into an actual allergist for the skin panel.

All of this was for naught, as his father wasn't following doctor's orders to put on steroids and he would just keep using lotion and creams that burned his skin. It took the doc to threaten to call CPS for him to care for his skin correctly. It was a battle and a half with his skin and I was the only one fighting it. Those poor cats, being blamed and not given a chance.

I thought the steroids weren't working so I tried diet changes to woowoo stuff like hemp oil on his skin (which actually seemed to work). When he finally went to the doctor with us is when he admitted he wasnt using topical ointment steroids and instead would put lotion which completely wrecked our boy's skin. At that point I wanted to just keep the boy away from him, but I'm not like that and if he's actually going to follow through, then it's fine.

We're hurt over our pets being gone, but with the state of his skin, I was going to do anything for him and his health, and I did. Can't say much for his father. He wanted him to go to school in the crime ridden, Russian thistle infested area he lives in.

The long term effects of declawing a cat are physical and psychological.
One, they put weight on their claws their entire life. Cutting off multiple knuckles fucks that balance up, on top of potentially causing major issues with using a litter box because the feeling of litter against an amputated knuckle isnt the best.
Two, you're stripping them of their main defense, leaving them feeling helpless against anything they perceive as a threat.
If you dont want them scratching your furniture, simply by a scratching post. If they still do so, get a squirt bottle and spray them with water. I've had 4 cats in my life. The shittiest ones were declawed and fed dry shit kibble that caused crystals in their urine (childhood cats). The best ones I've owned ate wet or raw food and had their claws in tact.
