Grab a Missouri Meerschaum from a drugstore and a Bic (will run you maybe 10 or 12 bucks total). Some folks say to start with drugstore tobaccos like Half n Half or Captain Black but I'd recommend against it, as they tend to bite super easily. I'd head to the local tobacconist and get an oz of an English blend and an oz of a Virginia and see which direction you want to go from there.

It happens to anyone who smokes too much. I know people who only smoke pot from a pipe but smoked a lot who developed coughs and shortness of breath. Our lungs just don't handle taking in lots of smoke like that very well.

You seem to be confusing pot with tobacco. Pipe tobacco smoke isnt inhaled like cigarettes or pot, the alkalinity is wrong and it will make you throw up like cigars are infamous for doing. Cigarette tobacco has additives to adjust the pH and anaesthetics to suppress the gag reflex so the smoker can inhale it without throwing up. Pipes, like cigars, are sipped and the smoke goes no farther than the mouth. The paper, glue, and additives in cigarettes cause the cancer, not the tobacco. Note that tobacco smoking (pipe and cigar) was nearly universal in the 1700's and 1800's, but cancer deaths only soared when smokers switched en masse to cigarettes in the early 20th century. Pic related - it was the original damning graph relating cigarettes to lung cancer deaths. Missing from the graph is the number of total tobacco smokers including pipe and cigar, including those numbers makes it clear that the total number of smokers remained relatively constant, they simply switched from other forms of smoking to the more modern and convenient cigarettes.
