"Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.

The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided."

When I was a kid there was a grape boycott, I didn't really know too much about farm workers or organized labor, I was too young for that. I just heard you weren't supposed to eat grapes. So I developed this lifelong attitude about fresh grapes that makes no sense at all.

I don't mind the taste, and I love wine, I just have this deep seated sense that it's wrong to buy and enjoy table grapes. I recognize that it is fully nonsensical, I don't avoid them when they're right in front of me, it's just a thing that was embedded in my subconscious early on, and I don't actually care enough about grapes to try to "fix" my "condition".

Not long ago I was in an agricultural region of France, where the politics of grapes are totally different, and the actual grapes in markets are amazing and delicious. Did I buy any? No, because I was on vacation and it would have entailed a weird psychological battle with myself that would not have been worth the effort. I did drink the wine, and eat all the other produce. Just no fresh table grapes.

I wonder if a bunch of kids are going to grow up with something like that, but for romaine. This is the second time in a year, that's an eternity if you're a small child.

Lettuce and other low-ground grown leafy greens are just particularly prone to contamination that gets into the the layers and crevasses of the plant near the soil.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/04/26/why-e-coli-keeps-getting-into-our-lettuce/
>A more recent analysis of outbreak data from 2013 concluded that “vegetable row crops” — lettuces plus broccoli, asparagus, celery and some other vegetables — account for 42 percent of E. coli infections. In the past four months, E. coli infections linked to leafy greens in Canada and the United States have caused 151 illnesses and two deaths.

>“Leafy greens continue to be a problem, and we’ve looked at leafy greens and fresh produce with concern,” said Robert Tauxe, the director of the CDC division that responds to foodborne illness outbreaks. “Back 15 to 20 years ago, there was a huge concern in food safety around foods of animal origin. ... But beginning about 10 years ago, the produce side has become more and more prominent.”

>Contamination can occur on the farm when birds make frequent flights overhead or low-lying fields flood with contaminated water. E. coli can also be spread by farmworkers who don’t wash their hands or via farm equipment that has manure on it.

>While packers frequently rinse lettuce with a chlorine wash to kill pathogens, studies have shown those sprays are only partly effective. The same is true of washing fruits and vegetables at home, Tauxe said, because pathogens “cling” to the surface of produce and can even enter the inside of a leaf or fruit after they've been cut

https://abc7.com/food/fda-tainted-romaine-lettuce-likely-came-from-ca/4735151/
>LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The investigation into the E. coli outbreak caused by tainted romaine lettuce suggests the produce likely came from California, federal officials said Wednesday.

>Earlier reports had said the tainted lettuce likely came from Arizona. But the majority of romaine lettuce available on store shelves this time of year is grown in California, experts says. Of the 32 cases, 10 were based in California - nine of them in Los Angeles County. The cases of infection with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli were reported between Oct. 8 and Oct. 31.
