Depends. My local joint has a dinner combo for $7 that comes with pork fried rice, Sweet&sour pork and chow mein. They tend to skimp on the s&s pork so we get an extra side of that for $3. Altogether its about 3lbs of food. We split it and its enough for 2-3 meals for each of us and it's ducking tasty.

Some places Ill opt for chicken fried rice or curry.

This is what I order but bear in mind it's more expensive to order this way. You'll get more calories for your dollar with fried rice or chow mein. I think one misconception around Chinese food is that they have a separate menu for Chinese people. In many cases probably they do, but it's also the case that Chinese order different items, and are willing to spend more. The people you see who are best buddies with the owners probably spend a lot too.

>Da dou miao
Sauteed snow pea tips. This is the best vegetable dish, and most places serve it. I think one of my favorite places served it with preserved egg.
>Crispy chicken
Chicken friend until crisp and chopped into pieces.
>Steamed fish
Goes by a variety of names, but fish steamed with ginger and scallions.
>"Red cooked" pork hock
Also goes by a variety of names, but it's slow cooked porks shank. See http://hungerhunger.blogspot.com/2010/03/hung-shao-yuen-ti.html
>Clay pot tofu
One of the best tofu dishes, very similar in some ways to agedashi tofu.
>Mala chicken
In Szechuan places, this is a go to dish. It's like crispy chicken buy with chili and szechuan peppers.
>Shui Zhu Yu
Possibly the most classic Szechuan dish, fish slices in a soup of chili and szechuan peppers.

And for dim sim/yum cha I order the following

>cha siu bow (cha sao bao in Mandarin)
BBQ pork buns. Very tasty and filling.
>Har gow and shumai
I always forget which is which, but these are classics and I feel compelled to order them.
>Pai Gwat
Pork spare ribs. Another classic, don't really like it but I order it for the table because usually someone does.
>cheung fan
Rice noodle sheets with either bbq pork, shrimp or scallion, wrapped into a cylinder. Very tasty.
>jia leung (jia liang in Mandarin)
Doesn't have an English name but it's you tiao (Chinese donuts/crullers) wrapped in mi fan (flat noodles). Quality really varies a lot, but I always get it once at a new place. When it's good it's really good.
>sin juk guen
Bean curd sheets wrapped around pickled vegetables and pork. Quality also varies a lot.
>Anything that isn't standard
A lot of places experiment so I like to try it. For example Nom Wah has a really good Shrimp & Snow Pea Leaf dumpling. I've never had it anywhere else, and it's actually the only thing I really liked there.
>dan tat
Egg tart, originally based on the Portuguese egg tart. Most places make these decently and it's the only dim sim desert I really like.

I avoid the following

>vegetables
They are actually expensive and come drenched in oysters sauce that I don't like
>other sweets
Just my preference
>Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf
Not a hard rule but you don't want to fill up on carbs at dim sim
>Deep fried lobster dumplings
They are expensive and not that good in my opnion.
>Chickens feet
I used to order them to be hardcore but realized I don't really like them.
>Scallion pancake
Dim sim places tend not to make this well, it's more a Northern or at least Shanghai thing.
>Xiaolongbao
These are a Shanghaiese speciality and Dim Sim is a cantonese thing. Dim sim places will make it, and it's ok, but nothing special and not worth it.

also (speaking as southern chinese) for daily eating veggie dishes tend to outnumber the meat ones, except for special occasions. For things like traditional canto/teochew cuisine theres also strong emphasis on lightly seasoned steamed dishes. Even stronger tasting braised meats isnt unhealthy. Deep frying is uncommon.
