That's why it's so popular, it has a very unique profile, that just so happens to go great with coke. All the other premium jack is very meh, nice nose but a basic one or two note taste. Black label is the best they do, none of the others are worth the premium.

This is something I actually know a bit about. It stems from a practise I believe started in the Royal Navy - when mixing high-proof rum with gunpowder, it is possible to cause it to ignite and you know, do what gunpowder does. Using this technique, it is possible to see whether the quartermaster has been watering down your daily tot of rum (presumably keeping the extra for hisself). This was referred to as gunpowder-proof.

As an aside, there's a company producing rum these days called Pussers that uses the original recipe used by the royal navy before they stopped the tot (back in the 70s I think). Their gunpowder proof is as strong as it would have been back in those days.

Kinda this. It's like ordering a burger in a restaurant because you don't trust them not to fuck up anything more complicated. Ordering one is kind of an indictment of the place. It's like saying, "I don't trust that the tap lines have been recently cleaned, the bottle beer selection is shit and the bartender looks like he'd fuck up any more involved drink."

That said I'd personally never order one, because I've learned from experience that sugar and alcohol are a bad combination - a surefire way to feel like shit later on if you decide to have more than one or two drinks.
