It's most important to have the right grind size.
Don't put boiling water on the coffee. Water should be ~185F. I bring it to a boil and then open the kettle and let the water cool for two minutes.
Let the coffee "bloom" to the top of the French press for a solid minute, then stir it. You won't want to use a metal spoon just because it can scratch or fracture the hot glass of the French press. Stir the bloomed grinds back down into the French press and put the lid on, plunger up, to retain heat.

It depends on the coffee you're using as to how long you leave it. If you have a nice coarse burr grind, you'll leave it longer, about 6 minutes. If you're using a finer grind like preground coffee, four minutes would be about the max.
Similarly, a lighter roast coffee can steep longer, where you'll want to cut short the time of a very dark roast coffee.
Press the plunger down very very gently. Don't use force; use only the weight of your hand. You want to let the water go through the mesh slowly without forcing any small grinds/residue through the mesh.
Pour immediately.

I had one. I didn't like it. But plenty of people do. It's preference.

The part that really baffles me is people saying it's the most convenient. That makes no sense to me. Look at all this shit! There's all this assembly and disassembly, extra attachment for different cups, you still have filters and shit, you have to flip it upside-down at one point, if you missalign the filter or put the plunger in cock-eyed it'll leak or you will get grounds in your coffee, and you can't adjust quantity easy. Also if you have a mug with a narrow base you can buck it over when you press the plunger down.

My aeropresses sucked at first, I learned a few things:

1. The grinder is more important than you'd think
2. Most beans actually peak 7-21 days off roast, so don't grind until they're ready
3. Despite being plastic, pre-heats matter a lot
4. Ignore the instructions, they're wrong and gay, particularly brew times. I fill it by half, let it bloom for a full minute, stir, fill up all the way, stir again, and then wait another 60-120 seconds depending on the bean

Also stopping at the first hiss is overemphasized, yeah it matters a little, but everything else matters a lot more

Not exactly a home setup, but Barista Betty here has been my daily workhorse for the last eight years. I personally don't give a shit about the "third-wave" level of attention to changing grind and dose for every set of shots I pull, so that Mythos stays where it is and I just tweak the grind to keep it in line.

If I had the room at home and a crazy amount of disposable income, I'd get the Appia's smaller sister in a heartbeat. Not that I have anything against any other 'spresso machines, I'm just so much more familiar with this one above others that I know I can make everything I personally would ever want to with confidence.

'cept Turkish coffee. Still waiting for one of my baristas to have her aunt send her one of those things from where she is off the Mediterranean.

Oh, and fuck this Bunn grinder. Nothing wrong with the line or model, this one just happens to have some loose parts so the safety switch doesn't stop it from dumping coffee everywhere if the bag/cup aren't in the right place and the chute flap rattles irritatingly loud.

So there you are. Slightly more commercial than most, but hey. A battlestation is a battlestation, and this one is mine.

I used to do french press when I was drinking in smaller quantities (before grad school). Now I drink from a drip machine. My secret is to fill the filter with relatively fine ground coffee, then put another filter on top. Then run the machine on a lower speed (normally called "bold").

The problem I have with drip is:
1. Uneven extraction from channeling in the grounds.
2. Drip machines emphasize speed. So the beans get extracted way too hot/too fast.

The filter on top creates a flat plane of water that percolates more slowly through the packed coffee grounds, giving it more time to cool and reduces the channeling (figure 1).

I freeze them. They're dry as a bone anyway so they're not really freezing but it ought to stop oils from evaporating and keep them fresh for longer. If you're worried about friction in the grinder then it might help to stop that.

I don't drink coffee much anymore, but I had upgraded from an inexpensive NorPro manual grinder to a nicer Hario manual. The Norpro kept loostening whenever I would grind my beans until I bought a nut to fit onto there to lock it in place, but beans would get caught in a gap just above the grinder itself which got frustrating.

Two french presses (single serve and a larger one for when I had company over, a percolator that I barely used, and mason jars solely for cold brew. Owned a nice ceramic pourover that I can't recall the brand up, but gave that to a former gf since she had nothing at her apartment.

Typing this up makes me want to dig my stuff out of storage. It was always such a nice morning ritual to make my own coffee since it helped actually motivate me out of bed.

Tfw capitalist draught spirits suck the heat out of your coffee.

I have some amaro gayo that I'm going to put in a metal coffee tumblr, maybe add 190, 200, 212 degree water at intervals of a minute maybe.

Either way if you're getting a machine grinder for the love of God get a burr grinder, not a blade one. With nearly all coffee making apparatus you get what you pay for, and unfortunately there's generally a pretty large cost and quality gap between "mediocre/for the ignorant" and "professional/hobbyist."

Any "high quality" espresso machine is usually going to be made by the same companies who make commercial ones so you'll be in the ballpark range of what a business owner would pay without being able to register as a wholesaler for a discount. Down in the range of $800 or less you're more likely to find espresso machines that are the machine equivalent of "Instant Mocha Cappuccino Latte Powder" and there is only so much your skill can do to mitigate having inadequate equipment.

All that being said, all that matters is you being able to make coffee that you like. Just know that it may be pretty hard to make espresso resemble what you'd get in a café without owning the same caliber of equipment.

I have limited experience with hand grinders so I can't say much for or against them. I assume you get what you pay for there as well.

The Breville Barrista express line are pretty adjustable, you'll be able to tweak it as desired.
If you really want to have complete control then you need to go all manual, get a hand-operated espresso pull pump, hand-grinder, stuff like that. That's almost certainly the best quality stuff too as well as being pretty cheap. A Japanese hand ceramic grinder only cost me about $20 and is amazing quality but my Breville does 99% of the same quality and does it in seconds with a perfect grind every time, the manual one takes me 2 minutes and I get varying results unless I'm anal with a measuring scoop and keep checking the powder.

A gooseneck kettle is preferred just to make it easier, but any kettle or even a measuring cup that pours easily works just as fine.

Paper filters made for them are needed, but it is best to let the coffee 'bloom' by pouring a bit of water on the grounds to let them soak. Then slowly add the rest of the water and wait for it to fill your mug. Is baratza encore a good grinder? Would it be worth the extra $60 to get a LIDO 3? I would only grind for pour over and moka pot
Also, how long does the LIDO 3 take to grind like 20-25g of pourover coarseness? One of the biggest reasons I want to upgrade is my hario mini mill takes like 5 minutes to grind enough for a cup and I hate having to do it every time

The LIDO will have FAR better grind quality than an Encore. I do 25g every morning in my LIDO 3 and it takes less than 30 seconds. If that's all you're doing as well, I'd say go for the LIDO, but if I was doing a lot more than that every day, I'd get an electric (Virtuoso, probably)

I also upgraded from using a Skerton (25g took two+ minutes) and the LIDO is not even remotely a chore compared to it and the grind quality is incredible

Baratza encore is pretty much the benchmark for home brew grinders. I upgraded to a lido e from the hario as well, takes about 20 seconds to grind 27 grams for my chemex each morning and the quality is outstanding. I honestly cannot see an advantage to buying it however for your purposes, the encore will serve you just fine for half the price, and you can upgrade the burrset with the virtuoso burrs to really get the most out of it. You won't be disappointed if you go with ether the lido or baratza, I just don't think you'd necessarily notice a $100 difference in your pourovers.

Apart from milk frothing, all nespressos are basically the same, and they are not the same as a coffee pot. They make real espresso though not as good as a proper machine.

The main problem with nespresso is they make small amounts so you end up going through a lot of capsules (I use 2-3 lungos each morning). I'm looking for the strongest ones so I can use less.

Any of yall have input on hand grinders? I have pic related, but not a huge fan of it-- over time the spindle that the inner burr threads onto became slightly bent, causing the whole thing to go out of alignment and give a really inconsistent grind. It's the second coffee hand grinder I've had that this has happened to, and I grind gently without pushing down. Most of the ones I've seen use the same type of functional design that is susceptible to this problem.

>do you like that roaster?
It's pretty alright. Feels a bit cheap, but nothing has actually broken in 2 years of use.
It has an annoying "safety" measure that requires you to press the start button to keep roasting when it gets down to 25% time remaining.
They say this is to prevent fires and such if you're not paying attention, but it doesn't run long enough or get hot enough for that to be a real risk in any normal cycle.

>how long did it take you to repeatably get a result you liked?
A couple months.
My usual method now is to roast 1/2 lb batches manually, max heat, until first crack then drop to 4/5 heat and increase drum speed. I usually try to stop it in time to get just the very start of 2nd crack as it enters the cooling cycle.

you may have noticed I have store-bought coffee and not a bag of home roasted.
I keep putting off roasting until I'm out of the last batch because roasting makes me sneeze a lot.
