What seasonings/oils/etc do I put in with my rice to make it as yummy as possible? Buying a rice cooker and brown rice.

>> No.11427351

Nothing, rice tastes good on your own, dumping grease and spices into it is for poos.

If you're eating brown rice get brown rice that's fresh and has been stored properly. Most fatfuck stores are selling stuff that's been on the shelf for years. You need to eat the stuff within 6 months or it gets gross.

White rice has less flavor, is quicker to cook, and easier to digest. Brown rice has lots of its own benefits but white rice also has merits. White rice can be good for people with sensitive digestive systems and is preferred by most athletes since lots of fiber can also have drawbacks, and in certain situations a lower GI index is desirable. Although not well understood, some aspects of high fiber foods may have anti-nutrient effects by reducing absorption. Just something to keep in mind. I still think brown rice is healthier but just trying to point out why informed people might still choose to eat it.You can get enriched rice which adds back some of the lost nutrients, if the rice is enriched you do not wash or rince it before cooking

A few drops of sesame oil is pretty nice. It adds flavor and aromatics. It's strong so a few drops is all it takes.

>> No.11429758

Use broth or half water half broth. Also melt some butter in and mix around. It's important that you don't add things that will "unmix" as the rice cooker will not circulate what's inside. Stuff like herbs will float to the top and cook on the rice at the top.

Stock, butter, hot sauce is all you need. You can always cook the rice in a sauce afterwards if you wanted. For traditional Japanese rice put in some rice wine, vinegar, sugar, and dashni kombu (or bull kelp)

Don't use a pressure cooker, and buy white rice instead. Brown rice isn't really much healthier or anything, and it has a worse texture.

Plain white rice is delicious, it doesn't need much. I make it a few different ways, but my favorite is:
>Saute a whole clove or two of garlic in a little bit of olive oil until it starts to brown
>Add in 2 cups of rice and stir until it's all covered in oil, don't let the rice start browning
>Add 3 cups of water and turn heat to high
>Once it starts boiling, turn down to medium and let the water level drop until there's craters forming on the surface of the rice
>Add a pinch of salt, turn heat down to the lowest setting, stir and cover the pot
>Let it simmer for 20 minutes covered, absolutely do not uncover for any reason during that time
Wa la, no excessive seasoning and no rice cooker.

Look up jolloff rice and shito spice blends to step your rice game up to actually flavorful levels. Asian style of rice is bland on purpose it's a complimentary side like a western bread basket it can be this fantastic thing but most of the time it isn't it's just carbs to fill you up. Afrikaans style of rices are dishes in their own right or Spanish/Latin rices as they are components of a dish (arroz con pollo) and are flavorful. Americans got their rice knowledge from natives (wild rice) or the Chinese when they came over to build the railways neither is that impressive which is why rice isn't a massive staple of food here just something we keep around to sometimes have if we aren't in the mood for potatoes or pastas

Korean grocery stores are a good place to buy brown rice because Koreans have taken a liking to whole grains of late, the inventory is going to be fresher and higher quality, because they're eating it every day, unlike wh*teoids who consider health to be a kind of punishment to be endured (leaving aside the question of whether brown rice really is healthier, which is a contentious issue not worth getting into here)

tamago gohan is top tier

Beat an egg with some soy sauce and stir it into fresh, hot rice. It'll get slightly cooked to a nice silky texture.

If you're feeling lazy you can just crack a whole egg directly into the rice.

More like 40 minutes with the built in warm-up and cool-down periods of a fuzzy logic cooker

Modern cookers are all about that GABA meme so cooking time is extended to two hours (plus a manual 7 hour soaking period)

These are always skewed and meaningless because when they say white they don't mean Anglo-Saxon they mean literally anything that isn't asian or black, so the white statistics gets ALL the latin american / gang and cartel crime associated with it as well, which isn't remotely "white".

They would probably still be higher than asian in some categories but you'll never know because an actual survey has yet to be done that's accurate.

I'm unironically trying to research and decide between buying a rice cooker or an instant pot. Seems like a quality rice cooker will do rice stuff better than the instant pot, but the instant pot can probably be satisfactory if you're not too picky. Plus it does a lot more things than just rice.

Does anyone have personal experience using an instant pot for rice?
Or a rice cooker for non-rice things?

I have both.
Several times I have tried to follow non-rice rice cooker recipes, even ones that came in a booklet with the cooker itself, and basically if it's not just steaming food over rice it's not going to work.
(side note: steaming a fillet of salmon over rice is ace)

Conversely, the instant pot is excellent for soups, stews, roasts, ribs, desserts, just about anything you could think to throw at it... except rice. Cooking rice by the directions included with the pot just leaves you with a pot full of uncooked rice and warm water.

why would you buy a rice cooker? it's the most useless thing to have in the kitchen.

>> No.11436043

>>11436030
Simple.
1) It frees-up much needed space on the rangetop. That might not be a big deal if one has a large range, but I only have 4 hobs and they're often all occupied.

2) it does an objectively superior job cooking rice compared to a normal pot (assuming we're talking about a good rice cooker with a pressure mode).

>> No.11436053

3) The convenience of "set it and forget it" with an offset timer cannot be overstated.

I own a rice cooker and I use it all the time. If you're cooking rice weekly then it makes it much easier since you can just set it up and leave it to do its thing. When it's cooked it will just switch to 'keep warm' mode. The rice is always perfectly cooked as well.

In fairness, the Asian kitchen is a little different from the Western kitchen. Even small apartments in the US will have four burners and an oven. In Japan you might have one burner that uses bottled gas, so appliances for water, rice, etc are a lot more practical than throwing another pot on the stove.

I'm a pround American and still use a Japanese Zojirushi cooker though.

Call me a wh*toid if you will, but for whatever reason I love adding soba tsuyu sauce to my rice. I like that bit of sweetness it has and much less saltiness over soy sauce. Although it's pretty liquidy so you have to add a lot, which I guess defeats the purpose of using something less salty than soy sauce, since you could just use less soy sauce if you don't want your rice to be too salty... still, it tastes pretty dang good. I get at least two bottles any time I go to H mart since I go through it so fast. Again, part of the reason for that is that it is so liquidy. Pic related is my favorite brand (marutomo)
