I have a question for everyone here thats making your own webcomic, whats the general age range of everybody here? I'm 28 and would like to eventually get published, but most of my ideas for comics are kind of weabooish anime inspired, and I'm wondering how old you can be if you want to go in this direction with your comics.

I'm 24. I used to draw "anime style" stuff when I was younger but reading other webcomics online made me pull away from the style as much as I could.

I don't really feel like there's an age limit on it, just how well you can do it. I would be more wary of people being critical of someone non-asian doing it, I've seen a lot of people snub their noses at american-made mangas and the like.

Gesture sketches always help loosen up your style and hone your eye for both shape and value. I'm shit at them but that's just because I don't do them very often. Still life drawing helps with value, shape, and also some mechanical skills as well.

As for the thread topics:
> How far have you planned your webcomic?
Had it all planned out at one point but two years ago I scrapped almost everything and started over.

>Do you have the whole script written out of are you writing page-by-page?
When I have more world-building finalized I plan on doing a full script.

>Share some of your future plans! What scenes, characters, locations, events, etc are you excited for!
I'm mostly excited for getting this world and story and character mob I've been lugging around out onto paper where people can read it, enjoy it, and talk about it. My goal is to make something I'll be proud of when it's all said and done.

Mostly frustrated with myself because I can't seem to hold focus for more than a few months at a time. That or I think about all the work I STILL need to do and it gets overwhelming. It's like building a house all by yourself.

Not the same person but I already started messing with it and needed a post to reply to.

Thing is, real "extra dark" people wouldn't work in comics because printing in the correct colors to get there would make them look like a phantom.

When it comes to coloring for comics you kinda need to imagine that everything dark has a layer of fog over it to make sure it's readable. Your character can be extra dark... compared to everything else.

I've thought about the printing issue, but I've read enough tricks and image settings to avoid the overall darkening. I've gotten some test images printed off before and with normal settings in Pshop they come out like burnt toast. I can't remember the specific settings I used but recently a piece I did printed almost perfect for a calendar page commission I did for a company.

Typed all that before your pic popped up. I see what you mean! I'll repost a sketch I put in the last thread that doesn't have the warm highlight. I've got like three or four levels of planning, and it's really hard to sort through them because they're all jumbled up.. everything from 'this is dialogue should happen' all the way up to 'this is a general theme that should be illustrated' and everything in between
sadly none of it really shows up in the comic, but a lot of unintentional ones do, so it all evens out.

right now I've used up as many ideas for new settings and events that I think I can squeeze in (that's what the splitting up was for) so now I have to just order all the final stuff and make it work and live up to all the other 'endings' that it didn't end at before

I also have a few bits of planning for the next iteration of the comic, especially things I want not to be so inconvenient or unbalanced this time (for example, keep the fucking cast smaller, stupid.. even though I already have at least five i want to use)

I'm going to be 28 next week. My webcomic is an idea that started when I was 16, and I've locked it in that time period. It takes place in 2005 and is about 15-to-17-year-olds. If actual present day teens find that relatable then that's fine, but the real target audience are the people who would have nostalgic feelings about being that age at that time. I like to think that I write teenagers well enough that real teens would see some appeal.

I don't know how to pace the appearance of the rogues. Perhaps the archenemy should be less frequent than the others, reserved for special occasions? Seems like in my current outlines, the other antagonists are being brushed aside, running the risk of being irrelevant.

And for the purpose of this discussion, I define the 'archenemy' as 'villain for which the animosity with the hero is personal'. Not just some bullshit where they just fight often, but where the two sides are in a deep personal conflict for reasons important to who they are as people. (mutual slights, ideological differences, you killed my loved one, etc)

I hope I articulated that clearly.

I just don't know what to do. I want my comic to be a fun experience from start to finish, I don't want it to feel like a chore for new readers to get to the good stuff, but this culture of preservaing and progressing that permeates webcomics makes it so hard to think of a way to deal with it.

I assume it's a long for comic.
Also, when is it going to end? Could you edit it so that it concludes sooner? What is the shortest way to the ending? Could you do that? That way you could start over with a new project AND achieve finishing your current comic and keep your readers happy.

600+ pages.

>Also, when is it going to end?
I have the story planned out, but it's hard to say how many pages it'll be. I've been ballparking 2-3 thousand by the end.

>Could you edit it so that it concludes sooner?
Not really. The problem with my improvement is that the story going forward is much more airtight. It's the early years that I fucked so much up.

>That way you could start over with a new project AND achieve finishing your current comic and keep your readers happy.
I'd rather not struggle to rush to the end of it just for the sake of ending it. Especially if it means a bigger ratio of bad-good.

It's the old pages I need to do something about, not the stuff I haven't gotten to.

I'll be brutally honest. Don't restart, whatever you do. It's more important to finish a story if you want to improve. Your problem is you need to learn writing technique. Especially story structure. If you're at page 600 and still don't know exactly the amount of pages you have left, you have NOT planned your story as well as you think. I keep hearing this from comic artists all the time. "It's hard to tell since it depends on so many things and..." no. Just no. Have you reached the inciting event or the first plot point or not? Because you should know. If you don't, your story might be anything from 600 - 10 000 pages for all you know. If you know you've passed the first plot point at, say, page 500, your story SHOULD be 2000 pages long, give or take a couple hundred. If not, you have a structure problem.

If you haven't reached the fist plot point yet, you really need to start editing. 600 pages is way too long to read just to get to the main plot.

Look. Don't be discouraged. Just read about story structure and start Killin your darlings. That's all. I'm saying this because so many artists keep asking the same questions and the road always leads back to story structure, which is something more people should study.

I guess I can answer your question by referencing another part of the drawing: hats like those used to take a lot of careful haberdashing and be rather expensive, until someone invented the stovepipe hat and it was ready to wear right off the rack. I plan extensively. I had stories ready before I could draw at all. I am excited that I can mKe things work the way I want now, and I can't wait to see how shitty today's art looks to me in a couple years.
I am going to relaunch in late april early may, but my preview stuff has generated unexpected traction.
Also, I am way older than anyone in here. One of the reasons I spend time in places like /co/ is that not everyone has surrendered yet.

re:the thread activity

I've had an outline for the first few chapters of my comic planned out for awhile and an idea for where I want to go for the rest of it. Trouble is I keep going back and rewritting shit. Some of it was cutting shit out and making a better story but I'm always worried that I'm using rewriting my story as an excuse not to pull the trigger and make the damn thing already.

Thread activity:
>How far have you planned your webcomic?
We know the end and the key plot points, but not exactly how we're going to get there just yet.

>Do you have the whole script written out or are you writing page-by-page?
I write the script out a full chapter at a time, and I go through several drafts before I hand it over to the artist. It takes about a year to work through a chapter, and I draft and finalise the next chapter before the previous one finishes. I sometimes tweak bits of dialogue as we go along, but it's usually just really pedantic grammatical stuff.

>Share some of your future plans! What scenes, characters, locations, events, etc are you excited for!
In a nutshell: more fight scenes, more monsters, supernatural sleuthing, splitting the party, drama, plot, and a little romance.

The colors are showing up fine, I've just never gotten pressure sensitivity to work consistently and resetting the tablet drivers only works half of the time. You need to have an ending and major story events planned out, and a backlog will definitely help if you want to keep a consistent schedule at the start, but you also can't put off starting that backlog (after you've gotten a visual sense of how you want to do it) or you'll just keep fine-tuning and you'll never actually put the thing out.

I was saying that if you have the end of the story planned but from 600 pages in you're either a) far enough from the end or b) haven't gotten enough of a grasp on your own pacing that you can't estimate how long the last stretch of the story will be in pages, you're probably meandering.

Again, it totally depends on the kind of comic you're making. If you're writing a sprawling fantasy/action piece with a bunch of arcs then it's reasonable to go well beyond 600 pages. If your pages are 1-3 panels and you want to tell a long-form story with that then 600 pages will be likely be proportionally early in the story compared to something more traditionally formatted. But a traditionally formatted comic telling a traditionally formatted plot with a beginning, middle, and end should probably be written more tightly.

These aren't hard and fast rules, I'm sure there are excellent exceptions to them, it's just useful to evaluate when you're that far in how much further you want to go.

Two things, really:
1. FINALLY finishing the current story arc. I'll be done with Chapter 7 this week, when we just got 1 chapter + epilogue to end it.
2. Starting the Second story arc. This time much more of a Low Fantasy feel to it; it won't have any magical elements besides the two main characters and is instead a more typical Knight's tale

I have this problem too. Generally I'm of the opinion that it's better to get shit pretty solid before starting, especially with webcomics because so many slow to a crawl when the artist inevitably gets to the point where they didn't plan out enough and has to write page by page instead of outlining.

That said, one thing that's helped me actually get a move on with mine has been tweaking the first few chapters so that they're almost, but not quite, a standalone story. Basically a simple three-act story that leads up to the inciting incident of the ACTUAL first act, but with enough of a mini plot to hold its own. It's really let me get a feel for the characters and the world before throwing them into the grander story. Not sure if that would work for your plot, but it might force you to get at least one solid chunk completely written so you can start putting stuff out there.

>> No.1187

see I find it goes the other way, they START out doing pages by the seat of their pants (too impatient to wait when there's pages to post) then slow down when it starts working so they start planning more in order to do what it feels like they owe to their audience

i like your idea though, some of my favorite comics start out with a selfcontained story for the first chapter, then once it's over they take a break and start doing more of a long-form comic

>> No.1188

I want to write a slice-of-life comic set in a high school for main characters, so its populated with archetypes from different genres and demographics (overbearing soccer players, seinen psychic delinquents, melodramatic tennis players etc). All the students are ranked on how strong a protagonist they would be, and the lower-ranked are all relegated to side/background characters while the higher-ranked rise to the likes of being club leaders, class presidents, student council etc.

But "school for main characters" seems a little thin in premise, so I consider having the kids be ordinary but giving them bodysuits to make them powerful instead. S/A-ranked students get the most benefit from the suits, C-ranked get no benefits but no drawbacks, D and below start straining their bodies to stay mobile. Then the setting of the story can be filled in (the technological/social progress and obstacles of people being augmented, how bias has changed/fallen over generations) and that can influence how characters in the story can think.

Alternative I can skip that, keep the first story idea and make the history just a fantastical clusterfuck of a setting (grim detectives, wise-cracking superheroes, paragons on the streets).

Not him but theres a number of ways you can do shadow magic that doesnt involve le sneaky sneak
For one theres that voodoo shit where your shadow goes out and attacks other peoples shadows, dealing damage to them

you could also have magic that causes shadows strain against the light, causing huge amounts of pressure to build up around them

shadow's a lot harder. Oddly enough it tends to overlap and include the illusion stuff.. plus it has a few opposite thematic stuff like being demonic/vampiric style, life draining, or just forming evil-looking shapes, sickles, spikes, etc out of blackness.. causing various status ailments.. you also get teleportation a lot. but none of that has anything to do with darkness in any way other tham metaphorically. Only hiding in shadow and blinding people makes direct sense.
It's hard to think of a real authentic 'elemental' attack for darkness since in reality it's just 'nothing'. so you could roll with that, include the power of void, of vacuum.. depriving people of oxygen, deleting objects from existence, causing catastrophic cavitation (like a mantis shrimp), that kind of thing. but honestly i'm all for just ripping off another element and paletteswapping it. black fire, black lasers, or maybe making black holes.

it also helps if you make them stylistically different. if a laz0r beam creates a lot of heat and maybe mirage effects in the air from said heat, maybe a shadow beam chills things or seems to drain their color. my japanese animes tend to give shadow attacks a lot of crackling lightning around them, whereas western things seem to make anything black glow purple, as if perhaps its emissions are just out of the visible spectrum range

That gives me an idea. Light magic energy is a mix of heat and lightning, whereas shadow magic is a mix of cold and... the opposite of lightning, I suppose. I'll have to think on that one. Ice feels a little too easy, but it might be what I choose.

As far as thread topic goes:
1) It's all planned except for specific emotional beats. This is meant to be a relatively short story.

2) I'm not really writing page by page as much as trying to nail certain arcs. At the moment I'm sowing the "seeds of doubt" in the MC, to push him into action to leave the salt mines and board the train to nowhere. Harder than I thought. I'm still on the fence whether I should explicitly state that the "unsalt" is sugar or not. I guess there are cons and pros of it....

3) I'm pumped to draw the payout for the whole setup, which is where the MC hits their real low point and then fate smacks them in the face.

It'll come to you with time and experience, but things like scene changes or surprise revelations* are suitable places to put page breaks.
If you have an idea of how many panels a page you draw, then putting in a page break every (eg) 6 to 8 panels is a good rule of thumb. Adjust this according to scene changes, story flow, etc.
It's an art, not a science, and part of the writing side of making comics.

*While less applicable for purely web comics, if you're thinking about having a print version, put dramatic revelations and such like on a left hand side page, especially if it's a splash panel. If it's on the right, when the reader turns the page there's the chance they'll get a spoiler before reading the build up on the previous page.

21. I've been coming up with comic ideas since I was around 11 but didn't start actually drawing them until I was 19.

I've been working at improving my early stories over the last few years, which have generally solid bases for plotlines but dumb details here and there because a middle-schooler made them. Like a story that takes place in a laboratory where the main character has dumb angel wings (because I enjoyed D.N.Angel and those Maximum Ride books) but also has a very emotionally charged plot and concepts I still think are fascinating. If I can rework it properly I'd put it on the queue right after Lido and my potential sequel to Lido (which also needs story work).

I also had a zombie story that I used to funnel all of my unaffiliated character designs into a single comic (including an albino supermodel of all things) but had a plotline I loved and genuinely don't think I've ever seen used in a zombie story, somehow? It was really basic, probably couldn't carry the story very far on its own, but if I could come up with a stronger main plot it could be attached to... I still wouldn't make it. Who the fuck wants another zombie story? But it'd be very satisfying. Maybe it's worth a short vignette, like 10-20 pages, where the reader can just mentally paste in literally any other crappy zombie setting because the zombies are so rarely the point anyway.

been drawing ideas since I was 14

My own was pretty weeb too. I had a comic idea where the story revolved around a guy born into a tribe of prophets/seers who would learn of oncoming danger and find heroes to beat it but the twist was that this time the prophecy never specified who it was so not even the seers would know, so the main character set out for heroes by himself

lot of it was inspired (read: heavily lifted) from a Dragon Quest IX save file I had, as well as some FE Blazing Sword cause the seer/prophet MC basically acts as a tactician as well as a guardian

I'm working on another idea but maybe I'll revisit it one day, who knows

You have these bright, saturated colors like Saffron's hair and purple shirt, as well as the green dude's hair, but the rest of the palette is basically pastels. Are you trying to go for a bright, cartoonish palette or a soft pastel one? You could probably find a way to make them work if you really tried, but imho these colors aren't really working.
I know you don't color your comic, but this has been bothering me about the art for the whole chapter.

For gesture studies you really want to focus on the movement/action of the figure rather than detailing hair, clothes, etc. You should try drawing real people rather than copying other people's artworks too, when you're still starting out. Even if you want to draw anime/cartoons having a basis in reality really helps.
You seem to have decent observational skills and control of a pencil, just keep on practicing, anon.

Anon, it's not that your drawings are particularly bad, I meant this isn't how you should be studying gestures.
You are focusing too much on delineating forms, when you should be trying to capture, well, the gesture, the movement and action, like this Anon said >>1340

https://youtu.be/74HR59yFZ7Y
https://youtu.be/pa_2rL1K1mg

I like to practice using this site in "class mode":

https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/

It will give you a bunch of photos, giving you progressively more time to draw them. What you want to do is use the 30 second drawings to capture just the gesture, 1 minute, you start drawing the shapes of the body, and as you are given more time, you focus more and more on rendering the smaller details. The photos are not always the best to practice, but it's the best site I could find for this kind of stuff. Good luck, Anon.

Does it work, but once you try hovering it again, does it break? Or does it not work at all?

I just tried the code, the "this.src" doesn't seem to be a problem. Maybe instead of "title=" you can use "alt=" after img src="regular image url" if you have an alt text.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and as far as I can tell there are two basic tacks you can take, assuming you don't wanna go for a foreign language:
A) have the character basically say what they're doing. e.g. "ancient spirits of starch, fill my party with the energy of your hydrocarbon bonds!" or "sting with the cringe of a thousand poorly-told jokes, FURIOUS MEMORY!"
B) string together words that sound neat together. e.g. Charlie Sheen, Ben Vereen, shrink to the size of a lima bean!

nono, you can. i mean that's a nekomimi
what you can't do is give it a cat nose too. once you go that far you're in
now this one doesn't technically have fur so you're not THAT far in, but it is an unusual color for skin, and matches the cat ear interiors, so..

It's not technically a cat. The best way I can explain is that they're kind of like animal races you'd find in something like an mmo RPG. You'll notice the hair on the tail and head are different colors than the skin.

But I'll certainly continue to work on the designs. I've redone the MC at least 15 times I'd figure.

Is having a teen to young adult main character pretty much a must or something?
I'm not criticising, I'm genuinely interested because I noticed it's a trend pretty much everywhere and I'm worried people won't care about middle aged to old characters who I'm planning to have as leads.
