It's not the only reason they exist, but I agree with some of your point. OP's glee is stupid. I do find some annoyance at the personal manager replies to every living post online, but the point of them posting is indeed more damage control than guest recovery. They are hopeful that they are planted a bit of a seed that their end cares about customers/clients, such that anyone other than them that might be reading that review will forgive the business, give them the benefit of the doubt, or at least feel they take care of things. It's lip service. Anyone that wanted a manager or owner reply would have done it personally and discreetly if they felt it could have been handled properly. It's passive-aggressive attack of a business if it's not an extreme problem.
Some businesses are do-it-once kind of outfits, like wedding services, and when they F up, people are really burned badly, and not even going to be repeat customers anyway. I know a couple who was sued by a no show photographer for a bad review at their lack of notice for bailing out, but who had the foresight to look up every one else who wrote a bad review about their business and take them to court with them that day, and several did go and testify. Judge ruled the review stays and court costs go to the bad business.
