I'm a (((literal))) boomer and Taco Bell is the only fast food that doesn't make me feel like absolute garbage. Then again, I'm also a drunk, and only ever eat TB when drunk.

So let's break this down. The first question is, why did you buy a $5 double chalupa box in the first place? And the obvious answer is that they had a new special item on the menu so you thought you'd give it a try. The problem is that the dc alone is $3.69, which is crazy, so paying an extra $1.70 for 3 more items seems obvious. But then you look at the other 3 items and have to ask yourself, would I ever purchase any of those items in any other situation? To which the answer is a resounding, "No".

Nobody actually goes to Taco Bell for the tacos, so that one is just a filler item - even though buying a dc and a basic beef crunchy taco would cost just 20 cents shy of $5 purchased à la carte.

Then there's the drink and the sugar cinnamon twists, which aren't even filler items, they're throwaway items.

So you try the dc and realize it isn't very good. That's the first problem. Is there anyway to make this messy, ill conceived thing palatable? Then there's the taco, which I've honestly just learned to cope with. The real issue is the throwaway items.

So the first issue and first letdown was obviously the drink. Drinks are how all restaurants make money, but unlike places that sell liquor, fast food places charge 3 figures for a fucking 5 cent sugar water, which nobody wants. The first time I asked if i could swap the drink for something on the dollar menu, because, you know, the drink costs more than a dollar, but unfortunately they said no.

So there's no workaround for the drink. I've tried a bunch of different things (tried the baja blast first because everyone talks about it, but it turns out it's terrible and is just memed ironically), but nothing is good. I'm trying to find something I could get without ice and then put into ice cube trays and put in my vodka. I got the gatorade tonight, which wasn't terrible but is basically just fruit punch.

So the next issue is the sugar cinnamon twists, and here's where the real revelation comes in: use the app. There aren't any deals on the app aside from the initial 20% one order, so I thought that the only advantage was that you could put in a complicated order without having to remember it at that drive through. But that's not the case. Some things that are free on the app will cost you an arm and a leg if you order them in person. For the cinnamon things you can change to a bag of chips with pretty much any dipping sauce. At first I went for the fake cheese dip, which kind of reminded me of Beavis and Butthead style gas station nachos, but even when they were drinking non-alcoholic beer they didn't look good, and after half a dozen mug vodkas they still aren't great. The second time I ordered without using the app they upcharged 60 cents for the chips and dip...

And instead of a soft drink you can get a freeze for only 70 cents upcharge. The first time I ordered without using the app they charged like 50 cents to change from cinnamon twists to chips and nacho cheese. Not sure why I haven't tried switching to a soft taco, and hard tacos are always terrible; but the soft taco just seems like a really small, sloppily put together burrito. I was going to get the skittle freeze one time but they were out, so had to get the caramel apple. The way I look at the taco is as a thing you just have to get through: "it's taco bell, let's eat this taco and get it over with so we can get on with the real food". I did try swapping a couple for the Doritos ones and it's like 60 cents more just for a different shell, which was way too salty and just overpowered the fillings; never again.

Getting back to the food, so far we've established that the sugar water is a throwaway item; try whatever you like, but you'll likely just end up pouring at least half of it down the drain. The taco is basically an amuse bouche, and should be eaten first in a few small bites to get you into the TB mindset. The cinnamon sugar twists should be swapped with a chips and dip at no charge. And then there's the double chalupa itself, which is basically a giant taco in a pita shell, and as others have mentioned, it's messy as fuck.

So here's the best option I've found so far: embrace the messiness and take it further. Fuck the chips and nacho cheese; get chips and their guac - it's honestly better than most of the sour cream cut shit they have at the free salsa bar at most taquerias around. Using the app, add red sauce and onions to the double chalupa at no extra charge. Add your fire sauce on top of that, and then take a chip, dip it in the guac, and then place it right where you're going to take your next bite of the double chalupa. Turned a mediocre, hassle of an item into an experience.

Night 7 reporting in. Didn't win, again. I owned a console for a while. The biggest deals were the controller, which you can use on PC, but I always seemed to have input lag. That could be bad porting though. What pisses me off about Taco Bell is how good the food has the potential to be, but there are so many ways for them to fuck it up.
At my local establishment they always use these crusty and browned tortillas when making burritos- I can't tell if they're just incredibly stale, or if they did something to it beforehand.
Regardless, it results in the burrito just falling to pieces as soon as you unwrap it. If they don't fuck up the tortilla there's some idiotic distribution of ingredients, like one half of the burrito being nothing but sour cream, or half being totally empty and the other side leaking all the stuff. It's to the point where you'd actively have to try to fuck it up for it to turn out this bad.
I'd estimate I get a *proper* 5-layer burrito 25% of the time. Most common problem (by far) is the tortilla, after that it's omission of ingredients (I often get plain bean and cheese burritos and am charged for a 5-layer- once I showed it to the employee and asked for what I paid for, and they got mad and tried to convince me that I just couldn't see the other ingredients mixed into the sea of beans) and idiotic distribution of the ingredients if they manage to get them right (a cumshot of nothing but sour cream is the most common offender). I don't even bother with more complex menu items or specials anymore.
I used to think McDonald's was bad, but they've stepped up their service recently. Taco Bell has the most consistently mentally retarded employees of any fast food establishment, by a hectare.

So I'm not gonna lie, as much as I don't look forward to going through the drive through of one of three different Taco Bell's every night, having to choose a sugar water I'll just dump most of and still be up most of the night with a headache with, and eating that stupid taco, when I actually get to the double chalupa it gets better and better each time. I drink lots of vodka. That cleans out my system, and even cleans my teeth (I haven’t brushed in years, and haven’t had a cavity since).

I also eat a liverwurst sandwich pretty much every day – to counterbalance the effects the vodka has on my liver. Aside from that, I drink large amounts of water (anywhere between ice-cold to slightly chilled) every day, always through a straw, and sometimes with a lemon wedge.

The only current deal on the app is for 15% off a party pack, and the best deal looks like the grande meal, which is $12.99 (minus 15%) for any combination of 10 bean burritos, soft tacos, or crunchy tacos. Obviously I'd go for the burritos, but I'm seeing if there's anything I can add that would want to make me eat their bean burritos for 4-5 days.

On a side note I picked up this Woodford Reserve on my drug store vodka stop. What can I say, I'm a sucker for promotional deals.
