A lot of Russian traditions I could see being syncretic with American culture, in another reality, where Imperial Russia and the United States were closer in brotherhood through the 20th century.
One of these is the Samovar tea tradition, which is fun, comfy and definitely Hygge.
Another would be the bread and salt giving ceremonies found in slavic nations, which is typical for housewarming, but also was given to cosmonauts upon their successful return to Earth.
Russian culture and cuisine, when viewed without political lens, is oddly comforting and understandable to the average white American. Both nations have legitimately positive intentions and good spirits. If only some (((international globalists))) didn't foster division and mistrust between our wonderful societies.

A good cabbage roll is some of the best comfort foods to be honest.

I'm from Winnipeg, and it has a massive Ukrainian population there. My mother learned to make all the eastern European foods even tho she's Italian, but when you mix the two in fusion like my mother did it made some good results. I didn't realize it until I grew a bit older and realized what my mother was doing. Like using potato dough for perogies, and stuffing them with ricotta cheese and frying them. Or her sunday gravy for cabbage rolls.

This. It violates the serving starch with starch rule most Americans eschew as bad nutritional pairing, no-no on the double starch.

That said, it is a popular ethnic restaurant, deli and absolutely popular frozen food at every single grocery in the USA. It pairs well with keilbasa, which again is not the utmost popular kind of main protein due to the cured nature and fatty nature of it all. It's poor people food, or occasional comfy food, depending how you look at it all. It's pan fried, then served with more fat, such as sour cream. So yea, not a health food kick kind of meal. People order crappy unhealthy food when out, because they're not frying at home, treating themselves, but often at home, they are doing more lean things.
The only reason it'd be in my own rotation at home would be because it's awesome pantry food. Frozen sausages, pierogies, long shelf live onions and sour cream. Good quick instant dinner that lasts and lasts until I'm ready to make it some night I'm not going out and it's been a while since the last grocery run.

I'm an italian/irish myself and grew up with a fair amount of italian food but I've had perogies too, I was a bit older and had it in a german context.

so I guess in short (and in a US sense) it's about how widespread the people and culture is. If you're looking for anything more than that I'd say that it's not super exciting or innovative but that's where it's more opinion and less solidly quantifiable.

American living in Ukraine here.

Best food I've ever eaten. Best coffee culture I've ever seen. I've lived all over and even mediocre joints bash out soul food better than the most expensive French restaurants. Even foreign dishes like Tournedos Rossini, which is $80+ dollars in the US, is $15~$20 here and just as good. Borscht cures cancer and Kephir helps you shit.

America is awful. Get a job online and leave it all behind for a 2nd world country and get a woman who cooks. That's my advice.

that's a cabbage soup usually cooked around christmas and winter time
there are of course many variations, everybody will like the one their babushka made it and will shit on all the other ones but anyway here's how I usually prepare it:

>boil a pork knee until super soft and falling apart creating a strong pork stock
>pick all the meat from the knee
>grab a bunch of dried wild mushrooms (they are pretty expensive to buy so make sure to forage them in a forest in autumn and dry them yourself) put them in a bowl and pour hot water over them so they soften
>in pork lard brown some cubed pork shoulder seasoned with salt and pepper, then set aside
>in the same pot cook a large onion until softened
>add minced garlic and tomato paste and stir to combine
>add the pork shoulder and meat from pork knee to the pot
>season with a teaspoon of ground cumin and eyeball a lot of sweet hungarian paprika, cook for a while but be careful to not let the paprika burn or it will get bitter
>add sauerkraut (store bought is perfectly fine)
>add mushrooms along with the mushroom water
>add some bay leafs
>mix all that stuff together and pour in the pork stock you made using the knee
>bring the whole affair to boil and cook for 45-60 minutes on low heat
>some 15 minutes before finishing add the sausages
>serve with heavy cream
>enjoy

The dish might not look particularly appetising but it's really delicious.

Many people add potatoes and/or dried plums to the soup but I never cared for either of those in my kapustnica.

Enjoy.

Polfag here. I usually make my appearance here saying how much I don't like Polish food. I'm in a good mood today so I'll just say that as a cuisine, Polish food is pretty boring. There are some dishes that are great, but if you are used to eating a good variety of foods you'll be disappointed eating potatoes, cabbage and meat in one form or another all the time. The worst part of traditional Polish cuisine is how bland it is. Black pepper is considered very spicy by most Poles who grew up on Polish food.

The good foods are the ones that people like everywhere, things like dumplings. Compared to the variety in Asian dumplings though, Poland has nothing to show for...

Paprykarz used to be amazing back in commie days. I grew up in Szczecin where it's from and it was a great thing to eat. Now a days a bunch of different manufacturers do it and it's terrible. They add more rice than fish, and the flavour is off as well.

Jello meat and fish are crap, but a good, spicy bigos that was tempering for 5 days on a cold balcony, and a nice thick PRL Mil-tec Grochówka aren't nice.

(jebać golonke i bieda-schabowe)

Most European food is pretty shit. Pretty much every country, except a few, is known for having maybe one good dish and alcohol because most of it sucks.

not to take sides, but looking at maps can give you false impressions about the size of countries, i guess you were referring to the most commonly used maps, Mercator ones, which distort, a lot

just take a look at Russia and the US for instance, Russia is somewhat less than twice as big as the US, but on the map it looks 3-4 times as big

I noticed that when I was in Warszaw. But you have lots of great dishes I enjoyed more than my cuisine. (Żurek, pierogi z kapustą i grzybami, pelmeni, bigosz and awesome chleb). All washed down with Zubrowka i pszeniczne piwo! Pic related.

főzelék is a term used to describe a whole range of vegetable based stews, you can use whatever you have in your kitchen, from spinach and peas to potatoes, cabbage, lentils and beans
