He had some disagreements and decided to do his own show. I'd be sick of those cows on ATK too if I had to work with them every day.

Quite the opposite. He kept demanding more and more money (was making 4mil a year at ATK) so they could let him out his contract and copy/pasted the mailing addresses of all ATK subscribers and took with him any employee he could take with him (they were contract employees so ATK had no legal recourse and thus screwed themselves over by being cheap assess) to start his own competing magazine and show.

ATK was trying to keep Kimball around as a figurehead on the show, but were finding ways to criwd him out of the management of the magazine/show/etc.
Kimball had originally started Cooks Illustrated and later sold the magazine to Conde Naste, which later discontinued the magazine.
Kimball repurchased the title from Conde Naste, and restarted the magazine, and the after a bunch if years of success, found he was essentially being forced out.
So he took what info and associates he could, and restarted as a different magazine.
Some of the claims against Kimball and Milk Street in the lawsuit by ATK were complete bullshit, like the layout of sections in the magazine, which is a layout used by probably half the craft and cooking magazines in existence.
If you want to know why ATK board were trying to oust Kimball, sadly the /pol/ type explanation seems possibly logical.

Not quite. I hear he very surprisingly planned a poach of favorite employees and planned his separate venture before anyone there knew he was even leaving. He started the biz, and though he was a weak link in intelligence and natural talent, it was his money and brand that made his magazine and that show and set, and all that created it. He should sued some pants off, but I think he simply didn't care.

The facts on Christopher Kimball is that he's a weird dude, likely aspie. But, he's a magazine creator, even though he had the same reinvent the wheel kind of mindset of like Cooking for Engineers, his execution appealed to masses of subscribers, maybe even for the lovely science-y botantical drawings on the rear cover. Who knows? I find it an annoying magazine, but if money were no object, it'd be something a cook enjoyed reading once a month. SNL's Phil Hartman notoriously made fun of Kimball before ATK with the "Anal Retentive Chef" because he was so fussy and overthinking. He probably, truth is known, helped people to know who Christopher Kimball was...

Most people of the age that enjoyed ATK probably weren't even old enough to remember he's been a bit of a pest for a long time. But, his ability to create marketable content is solid. Good for him and sucks to be them who lost out. People who are annoying to work with, or who want big money get forced out companies they create allll the time. They have to be careful.
