Store brand things from Safeway I have yet to have a problem with:
>preserves
>bread (often 3/$5 or $1/per)
>spices
>frozen pizzas
>Lucerne dairy
>bakery items, even the ones they put on the discount rack after sell date

My hot tip for Safeway is to always check the discount rack.

I started going to the local giant Walmart to buy certain items like oaper towels and cat litter at the cheapest price I could find.
Since then I’ve discovered that Walmart actually has the best selection on certain items, including certain types of fancy items.
Canned fish, Walmart doesn’t have some of the really fancy types Whole Foods has, but some utems are the exact same, but in different packaging, and half or less the price.
Rice. Walmart has types of rice, in giant bags, which I can’t even buy at Whole Foods or my regular Supermarket.
I really like small can Campbell’s Condensed Soups, and Walmart has three or four times the selection of any other local store I’ve been to.
Walmart has a decent selection of sauces and other condiments. Not some of the fancy stuff Whole Foods has, but still decent, and things like Coleman’s Mustard are actually somewhat affordable there.
Walmart is actually one of the better places to find Hispanic, Spanish, and Asian food brands without going to a bunch of small ethnic food stores.

It depends where you buy your food, but I'd go for:
Tinned tomatoes, beans, peas
Rice (takes longer to wash)
Noodles (ok but not great)
Cheese
Salt
Lard
Oil
Mayo/ketchup
Eggs
Fruit juice
Nuts
Herbs
Frozen or canned meat

What I would pay more for:
Fresh meat
Fresh vegetables and fruit
Bread
Margarine/butter
Yogurt
Spices

As a general but not exhaustive rule, preserved and canned food is okay for brand, but fresh stuff is more unreliable. I've learned the hard way from purchasing fresh beef or pork, opening it up and retching at the stench only a day later despite being well refrigerated the whole time.

A better question would be what isn't okay to buy store brand? There's only a few things that I buy "brand" names of:

Butter, because they sell them in sticks, as opposed to a 1lb block which doesn't fit in my butter dish.

Chicken and beef stock (specifically Campbell's) because they offer no added salt varieties.

Canned crushed tomatoes. This is because my GF insists on Unico (some childhood nostalgia) and I don't want to fight her. And again, they offer no salt added varities.

There's plenty, if not, most spices that I buy brands of (mostly Suraj) simply because store brands do not carry them and can't compete on prices.

Bread I mostly buy brand names, because I have a few specific loaves that I fall in loaf with. I occasionally buy bread from the in-store bakery as it's cheap, but has to be eaten quick.

Pasta (specifically La Molisana) because I love pasta and find this to be the best.

Bacon (specifically Maple Leaf) because store brand tastes like shit.

Milk. Store brand milk doesn't exist in Canada.
