why do I still have dreams about school cafeterias? I intermittently have dreams about going through the line, sometimes picking out things, sometimes trying to find a plate, sometimes trying to figure out which end I'm supposed to start at, sometimes just staring at food and being unable to make sense of what I'm looking at.

It pretty much just made shit more restrictive. Like flavored milks have to be non-fat and shit. Did nothing to help. No child wants to eat salads with browning rotted lettuce and rolls you can bounce off the floor like those rubber balls we used to buy out of quarter machines.

I am a teacher, and I have worked in schools in France and currently work in the US.

French school meals are way better than US school food. At the schools I worked at in France, school food quality is on par with that of like, the IKEA cafeteria, maybe like a half step above. It was seriously a pleasure to eat the food at the schools I worked in. I miss that; and I wish USA was more into that.

At the schools I've worked at in the USA it is not nearly as good. The breakfast food they give the kids is just lower sugar cereals or muffins or whatever, and a juice cup or a milk-- all of it prepackaged and processed. The lunch is fine-- pizza, chicken fingers, burgers, whatever. Some days the menu is better than others. The cool thing is the fruits and veggies are self serve, so you can take as much as you want. I don't even work in a wealthy district. Like %60 percent of the students are on free or reduced lunch where I work.

The thing that Michelle Obama did was push for more whole grains, less sugar, salt, and fat in the foods; and more fruits and veggies (hence the self serve).

Another difference between now, and when I was a kid eating school lunch is no deep fried food, and junk food like chips, pop-tarts, hostess cakes, etc, and high sugar drinks like soda or whatever.

So, with M. Obama's actions, it left this huge vacuum-- the food that already sucked, is now insipid and joyless, as well as low quality.

I think a lot of the reason for the difference is compared to nearly every other country, USA just doesn't hold cuisine in high regard, culturally. It's just shit we eat real quick to get back to work. Stemming back to the 1950s when everything was canned and convenience became a status symbol. I think it is changing now, little by little.

My senior year in high school was when the obama transition was made. It was hilariously bad. The food that we got before was hit or miss, but at least there was enough. Now the school lunch that cost me like 2.50 was worthless because i would be hungry as fuck. Our school had local restaraunts set up stands during lunch, one of which gave you nice, tasty chinese food for 5 bucks a small and 8 bucks for fuckhueg portions. I pretty much ate only what restaraunts would bring in during that entire year.

The sad fucking thing is during the summer we had football camp and got fed as part of it. However, the cooks didnt have limits. We got big ass portions of delicious food- it wasnt restaurant grade but it was always decent and up. So the lunch ladies knew how to cook, they just were never allowed to.

And lunchroom pizza was tasty as fuck, i really want to find some to make at home.

My mom transitioned from being a restaurant chef to running a large middle school’s cafeteria (she did it for the family health insurance). She was able to apply her expert level cooking to the cafeteria provisions and summon some magical stuff from it.

I was in highschool in part of obamafood era and I had a totally different experience. They switched out like a fried food type line for a sub sandwich line and it was so fucking good. You could get regular cold meat subs, but they also had a few weird options, like a taco sub, or a philly cheese steak sub, and the lunch ladies happily gave you whatever ingredients you wanted even though they weren't supposed to. My favorite was a fried chicken patty sub with melted cheese sauce, onions, and tomatoes.

Honestly, a lot of this stuff was going on during the G.W. Bush era as well. We used to have a wider variety of options both with the line and vending machines (Not the most healthy, but still pretty OK quality, at least the same quality you would get at a grocery store deli), and after a lot of political B.S. back in the day those options got reduced to the same crap the prisons served and pretty much every option in the vending machines was overpriced and not worth it.

I pretty much stopped eating lunch at school and just ate when I got home, it was that bad.

Public school is already government funded. So you had rich schools where kids were delighted with their new and exocitc offerings of fresh kale salad whatever, and poor schools where they’d get heaping helpings of canned green beans with no seasoning.
