If you're in the UK there's not much difference. Dunno about elsewhere.

Regular chickens are mass produced inside and covered in shit and fed steroids. Look for blackening on the knee area if it's not been scrubbed off with bleach it's a give away they've been crawling round in their own piss.

Free range is defined as they gotta have some outside space - some faggot law that says 15ft sq for every 3 million chickens (alright its not that bad but its close)

But if I get a whole chicken, the caged one has to be trimmed like a motherfucker. When I make stock, free range seems to make better stock, less shit to skim, its denser too. So get free range. If I'm gonna barbecue for others, I cant give a shit. Like that roast chicken in the OP is more about technique and seasonings than anything.

legally, not much. they have to be "allowed access" to the outdoors, but it doesnt say how long, how often, or what the quality of the outdoor world is. it could literally be a 1 foot square of dirt per chicken for 30 seconds a day legally

It's different here in Guatemala. The free range are called criollo. They really are free to eats bugs out in the fields. The skin color is a dark yellow and the egg yolks are a bright orange.

By definition - free range has space to roam, whereas other chickens will be raised in barns or cages
The idea behind eating free range chicken (besides ethical concerns) is that they are less stressed and have exercise resulting in better tasting meat. Most of the time the difference is negligible though, although you can get chicken that is raised in free enough conditions with a superior diet (corn fed is the obvious one) that you can see better quality meat (this is also often to do with breeds)
