I never tried a lot of whiskey, but bought some of this on a whim and enjoy it lots. Ive been drinking it with a single ice cube. Reccomend me some more moderately priced whiskeys that still taste pretty decent without breaking the wallet

There's several basic types of scotch, and you'll have to play with each to figure out what you like.

Basics:
Highland
Lowland
Speyside
Islay
Blended

Blended is cheapest, and easy to find. I like Grant's, for the price.

I can't stand Highland Scotch, it hits like gasoline to me (I'm sure everyone else loves it, and is so much cooler than me) but I love Lowland, or Speyside. Find you a cheap local brand that you can get, and try a few styles out.

Don't fall for the Single-Malt meme, you'll pay double or triple the price for something you won't appreciate until you really get a taste for it.

You picked a decent mid-grade Irish. I'm a bit of a whiskey enthusiast, and while I don't prefer Irish, nothing else comes close to its flavor. Scotch is similar, being of a mostly barley malt mash, but is usually smokier or drier. Each whiskey has its own charms, whether American bourbons/rye, Scotch, Irish, or Japanese.

If you like Tulla, don't bother with Bushmills or Jameson, because they're pretty much bottom of the barrel whiskey as far as the US goes. Redbreast 12 yr old cask strength on ice or with a nice irish red/Guinness chaser is always nice. There are also some high-end Jameson bottlings I've heard of, but have never tried. They will cost you, though. A cheap substitute would be 2 Gingers or Paddy's, but they're honestly about on par with Jameson or Bushmill's, except $10 or so cheaper for a 750ml

I would just stick with Tulla, though.

You can get almost any 10-12 year old single malt at that price range. Highlands are sweet, Speysides are grassy/dry/neutral/smooth, but also the "wild card" that can be smokey, and Islays are almost always super smokey and "peaty".

Lowland scotch doesn't have many US representatives, but I've heard it's closer to Speyside in being a more "neutral" scotch, but you be the judge.

These. American bourbon is great. Evan if youre on a budget. Four roses, Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey are a bit more expensive but well worth the money.

As far as Irish whisky goes Lagavulin and Ardbeg are good and widely available but kinda pricey

This. If you're just starting out with Scotch, I'd advise with Scottish whiskeys in particular to be very careful of Islay styles. Those typically have a very dark/smokey profile and can be overwhelming just starting out. I nearly got turned of whiskey entirely because my friend started me off with an Ardbeg 18 year old. I'm sure the stuff is good mind you, but the stuff tasted like I was drinking liquified burnt wood chips. If you can attend a tasting session I'd recommend it so you can isolate which styles you like. I'm a Glenrothes fan myself.

If you like Tully, you'll probably like other Irish whiskies, such as Jameson's and Bushmills. If you want to try a really high-end Irish blend, pretty much silk in a glass, I strongly recommend Jameson's Gold Reserve. As far as Scotch is concerned, the ones that tend to have the smoothness of Irish are the Speyside malts, so something like Aberlour 12 for a basic one.

tully is great stuff.

If you want to step up, go for some RedBreast or Power's. Red Breast, Powers, Tully, Bushmills and Jamison's were the only 5 that survived prohibition, if i'm not mistaken, and I think 4 of those were made at one distillery. My irish whiskey history isn't all that sharp, but as the story goes, prior to prohibition, it was irish (not scotch) that dominated the whiskey scene. But a perfect storm of American Prohibition, Ireland's independence from England and the potato famine pretty much killed global distribution. when the US was like.. hey prohibition is stupid, they pretty much called ireland was was like.. hey send the ship. and ireland was like, ok we will have a batch in 12 years. and scotland was like.. um... be there in 6 weeks. and that was pretty much how scotch became a global meme and irish whiskey is only just now recovering.

OP, it depends on what you like to try or just what you like.

If you want something similar to tulli, get more irish stuff.
Bushmils, jameson are sweet friendly entry tier.
Redbreast and teeling are better and pricier.
Scotch differs like fuck. If you would like to have something more complex but still approachable, get highland park, macalan, oban, old pulteney, glenfiedich, even bowmore 12.
If you feel brave and manly, get something peaty and smoky. Lagavulin, ardbeg, laphroaig and talisker are not that pricy but they are rightfully considered cornerstones and gateway to the World of super rich heavy flavours. You either love them or hate them.

buy a small 100mL bottle if you can at first to see what you like best damn it. you may hate something you buy in a 700mL bottle that you could have tried first for a fraction of the cost.

Suntory is a massive conglomerate. They own many of the famous Japanese distilleries like the Hakushu and Yamazaki. They also produce the Hibiki.
Other than that there's Nikka.

In fact, looking through Wikipedia I just discovered that Laphroaig is literally owned by a subsidiary of Suntory (as are several other well known brands).

Current fav is Laphroig, so something similar is probably a safe bet, but I'm open to experiments.

Even if Hennesy was the best cognac in the world and had a great price, I wouldn't drink it because of it's tainted image.
But taste wise, cognac is nice too. Also a fantastic cooking ingredient, deserts or savory.
Also (and you'll probably ridicule me for that) I use it to replace red wine, when I don't want to open a bottle that I will have to keep around for a while until I can drink it. A third each mix of cognac, balsamic vinegar and water works surprisingly well.
Currently have pic related and I'm quite happy with it. Maybe I'll see if the 10€ more for the VSOP are worth it.

Start cheap and work yourself up. That way you learn to appriciate finer whiskeys. Start with King robert or lord clovert. Both are mild (and dissapointing (you will most likely end up using them for grog)) Then go for single malts and finer schotch. find what you like. In the end you will end up with bourbon for 50$

have tried both the vs and vsop, the latter is noticeably more mellow but courvoisier's bottlings tend to a little harsher (or the raw alcohol in the spirit is more noticeable, shall I say - I still very much enjoy the flavour) than its contemporaries in my opinion.

Is it possible to buy like a variety testing pack for different booze? Like a bunch of small bottles with different brands.
I've never really tried liquor except vodka and rum, and I don't want to buy a bunch of bottles just to taste and not like any of them. I've never tasted whiskey for example.

Jack and Fanous Grouse are shit. Jameson is worth a try. Idk about Old St. Andrews.

Tullamore Dew is a fantastic Irish whiskey that’s commonly sold in 5cl bottles. Glenfiddich (mid- tier scotch) comes in small bottles as well. So does Johnny Walker Red (not the most impressive but not bad by any means. It’s easy on the tongue and good for beginners)
