Sometimes. But sipping won't get you fucked up. Only real benefit to good booze when trying to get fucked up is goes down easier, doesn't come back up as easy, and less hangover, especially body symptoms.

I first tried Scotch in my early 20's. It had a bite that was slightly unpleasent, but I enjoyed the peaty, earthy flavor. It wasn't an everyday thing, but I'd have it, maybe, once a week, with rocks to cool the bite.

As time went on, I'd drink whiskey-heavy cocktails and, on occasion, have straight whiskey. Eventually, I found that the bite didn't seem as prominent, even when sipping it neat, and what bite was there was enjoyable.

Whiskey neat is my go-to beverage, now. I prefer bourbon, but won't turn down Scotch or Irish whiskey. My palate, now, is better adapted to pick out the more subtle flavors and drinking whiskey is a thoroughly pleasant experience.

I feel like most whiskey drinkers begin with an appreciation for grainy, peaty, smoky, earthy, and woody flavors and find that no other beverage really had all these qualities. If you don't like those, in the first place, you won't like whiskies. If you do, you'll have the desire to and eventually will acquire a taste for it.

I usually go for Irish whiskey because even when it's not especially good, it's still okay, and even with the 'worst' Irish I've had I was still happy to work my way through it, either neat or with ginger ale. With scotch and bourbon, there have been bottles that I regretted buying and that sat around for ages not getting drank because even mixing them couldn't make them drinkable.

I came across this recently while reading Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellow. It was published in 1975.

>The delivery kid from Seventh Avenue came more and more and more often with bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label. She drank the best. After all, she was an heiress. Mount Coptic belonged to her Daddy. She was a Fundamentalist princess who liked to drink. After a few highballs Demmie was grander, statelier, her eyes great circles of blue, her love stronger. She growled in Louis Armstrong style, “You are mah man.” Then she said in earnest, “I love you with my heart. No other man better try and touch me.” When she made a fist it was surprisingly big.

I like Johnnie Walker Black but it's weird to think of it being considered "the best". That was before the era of single malt dominance, of course.

I got an Ardbeg 10 the other day and it was better than the last time I had it but I still like Laphroaig far more

The Laphroaig 10 has gone way downhill in the past few years, though, usually spring for QC or cask strength if possible.

It depends. People buy cheap blends like Johnny Walker Red to get fucked up without feeling quite as cheap, people buy good $100-500 bottles to enjoy the taste, and there are plenty of people who will buy $5000 bottles as a status symbol without caring how it tastes. The people who care about taste tend to avoid the extremes in price, and besides, you're not really getting much out of it if you're aging something over 30 years.

Stranahan. High west prarie bourbon. I like spicy bold whiskeys with many layers of flavor. Both are heavy with american oak which gives them their spiciness.

If your near a total wine get siesta key spiced rum or coconut rum. Excellent and affordable at around 20 bucks.

Weller's was requested all over town this past Summer because it apparently won some kind of award. That and a couple of others I could care less about. Old gents trying not to age would call in about fancy bourbons that no one has ever heard about.

Teeling’s basic single malt is not representative at all of their distillery’s potential and ability. Try the Brabazon cask if you can, it’s a total plummy jam bomb.

>and it's cheaper than the single malts too
Speyburn is cheaper and also better then shitty Black Label. Hell cheaper blends like Teachers and Black Bottle are better. Even Compass Box makes better blends for less then Black Label’s MSRP.

>Forty dollars is the absolute maximum anyone should ever spend on a bottle of blended whisky
>t. self proclaimed whisky aficionado
I thought this too until I tried an actually good blended malt made up of 60s and 70s sherry matured Speyside malts like Tamdhu, Glenrothes and Mortlach. Shit was beyond amazing and under $200 USD for 60s scotch. Blends can be good, it entirely depends on the care and attention put into them by the whisky maker. John Glazer at Compass Box also makes great blends, This Is Not A Luxury Whisky is a fantastic premium blend with loads of complexity.
The one thing I’ve learned from Whisky is never judge something you haven’t tasted yourself.

Single malt scotch only really became popular in the 90s thanks to distilleries like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Macallan pushing marketing to the point of global success. The 80s and early 90s saw a lot of distillery closures such as great icons like Port Ellen, Brora, Rosebank, Bladnoch and Imperial. Today all of those distilleries are being reopened or the site is being used as a distillery and even regions like the Lowlands which had only two malt distilleries, Auchentoshan and Glenkinchie, are seeing an explosion of new distilleries almost overnight from Daftmill, Alisa Bay, Eden Mill, Kingsbarns, Lindores Abbey, Glasgow Distillery, Clydeside, Annandale and more opening up every year. Even Islay, a place with one new distillery in over a century, that being the opening of Kilchoman, has two to three brand new distilleries in the works to open in the next 3 years.
Single malt is a new king of whisky helped by the global demand for malt whisky and bold bourbon and rye style whiskies. Blends dominated for centuries until the past 2 decades and even then they still dominate sales because only Chinese and Sandniggers buy the most expensive scotch because modern rich white people think that whisky is a waste of money over blow and hookers because they have no morals or love of culture.

Canadian here, the cask strength is good shit. Come to Ontario in September/October and you’ll possibly find one in the LCBO although most would trade you one for an EH Taylor Barrel Proof or an old Four Roses Limited Edition. you can definitely find some guys willing.
