I guess it's just this one time this happened. Who knows, maybe they just happened to have a small calamity at that exact time.

The official Steak n Shake policy was something like you can only ask the customer to pull forward if 1) you've already finished the meal for the customer directly behind and 2) the present customer's order is more than 2 minutes from being finished.
In effect we just told anyone to pull forward if the time was getting to be too long. This was even sanctioned by a few of the shift managers and possibly even the store manager as well. One shift manager, some stern mexican man who I thought didn't like me, one day started leaving the restaurant just to pull through asking for a water so that my times would decrease. He was a good guy; I hope his family hasn't been deported.

That's just not how it works.

Sure, I'll admit some locations aren't run as efficiently as they should be. But at my location, a pull ahead is always a priority. If an order isn't ready within 10 seconds of a car pulling to the pick up window, then it gets pulled, simple as that.

Sometimes you really just do wait that long, if you sandwiches are done and your fries still have 2 minutes, you might as well count that as 3 more minutes to finish your order, or, if the car behind you is a soda, pulling you to get that order bumped off is what should be done as well

The sensor starts the timer when it detects a car entering, and it resets the time when that car leaves. There's no sensor in the waiting parking spots at all.
