>>11087545
>first dietary measure for cancer patients is to immediately cut any sugars because cancer cells live off that shit
Calorie restriction definitely has potential benefits in cancer treatment. Ketogenic dieting is at best severely lacking in evidence for cancer benefits. If you try looking through what few studies they have they're mostly limited to A) mice and B) specific varieties of brain cancer and C) benefits that only appear in conjunction with more traditional cancer treating drugs. Yes, cancer cells subsist off glucose, but that's not the same thing as saying dietary sugar is the problem (also doesn't mean dietary sugar isn't a problem, but you'd be hard-pressed to find evidence where dietary sugar was associated with some health problem but obesity wasn't i.e. it might just be the case that obese people happen to also eat higher amounts of it and then all the problems associated with obesity will end up being associated with sugar because of obesity rather than because of a direct mechanism of its own).
Realistically, how low are you going to be able to get your blood sugar anyway? Even the most extreme keto advocate is still going to have nonzero blood sugar by virtue of being alive.

>> No.11087807

>>11087545
PS: If the ketogenic diet is being suppressed as a treatment for cancer because of greedy pharmaceutical companies or something, why is it universally or near universally accepted as beneficial for children with epilepsy? >Brain. Glucose is virtually the sole fuel for the human brain, except during prolonged starvation. The brain lacks fuel stores and hence requires a continuous supply of glucose. It consumes about 120 g daily, which corresponds to an energy input of about 420 kcal (1760 kJ), accounting for some 60% of the utilization of glucose by the whole body in the resting state. Much of the energy, estimates suggest from 60% to 70%, is used to power transport mechanisms that maintain the Na+-K+ membrane potential required for the transmission of the nerve impulses. The brain must also synthesize neurotransmitters and their receptors to propagate nerve impulses. Overall, glucose metabolism remains unchanged during mental activity, although local increases are detected when a subject performs certain tasks.
>Glucose is transported into brain cells by the glucose transporter GLUT3. This transporter has a low value of KM for glucose (1.6 mM), which means that it is saturated under most conditions. Thus, the brain is usually provided with a constant supply of glucose. Noninvasive 13C nuclear magnetic resonance measurements have shown that the concentration of glucose in the brain is about 1 mM when the plasma level is 4.7 mM (84.7 mg/dl), a normal value. Glycolysis slows down when the glucose level approaches the KM value of hexokinase (~50 μM), the enzyme that traps glucose in the cell (Section 16.1.1). This danger point is reached when the plasma-glucose level drops below about 2.2 mM (39.6 mg/dl) and thus approaches the KM value of GLUT3.
>Fatty acids do not serve as fuel for the brain, because they are bound to albumin in plasma and so do not traverse the blood-brain barrier. In starvation, ketone bodies generated by the liver partly replace glucose as fuel for the brain.

I dont keto but i do exclude dietary sugar and carbohydrate
Eating lots of healthy good meat is sufficient for this glucose as it can freely be converted to glucose by your body when needed
Good protein is a superior source of most nutrients as it can be used to provide other nutrients than protein
Collagen in meats also accounts for most of the required nutrients from these foods
Dietary carbohydrate and sugar is also what drains your body of vitamins and minerals which results in a higher daily requirement which is why many people can live on meat and fat alone for decades without experiencing any vitamin or mineral deficiencies
I have no sourcing but this is all true from what i have tested on myself and seen in others. Stay hydrated, eat good meat, stop letting the money collecting industry that is scientific research control you and be a real scientist with yourself, try things out and understand your own body because quite frankly no scientific study is going to reflect your specific genetics most of the time. :^)

Because organisms without an "automatic limit" have survived and reproduced. Evolution isn't trying to make your life pleasant, it's just an ongoing case of whatever works works and whatever doesn't doesn't. If not having this "limit" resulted in everyone dying before reproducing then maybe organisms with a "limit" would emerge and replace them. Widespread obesity is a modern disease caused by the easy availability of cheap processed food that is very calorie dense. Most of it is carb heavy, sure, but that doesn't mean that the carbs themselves are the problem. If they were, it would have been apparent a long time ago because there have been hundreds of civilizations since the invention of agriculture whose staple foods were carbs and none of them were full of obese people.

That's not how it works, son. That makes about as much sense as saying, "Why doesn't fire stop burning? Why does it just keep consuming fuel endlessly as long as more fuel is added? Why isn't there a limit?"

At some point, an organism developed a mechanism for storing energy in fat. That's the starting point, excess energy-->fat. Any limit to the mechanism would have to have developed later and as ha already been explained, evolution doesn't really care if excess fat storage kills you in your fifties.

Developing a mechanism to store energy is the default. If there doesn't accidentally happen to already be a system in place to limit it then yes, endless storage is the default. And the body's ability to store energy is very obviously not unlimited in the first place. What you seem to expect is some system by which the body can anticipate how much stored energy it will require in the future, determine what an appropriately "healthy" amount of storage is, and use these factors to somehow limit itself in storing energy.

It's really dumb and it's even dumber to think that this extremely complex and unnecessary system would somehow have had evolutionary precedence over the simple ability to store excess energy. I wouldn't need to be arrogant if you'd stop being so retarded.

We would've been limited by how much physical activity was required to get that much food. >> No.11091709

I think he's onto something.

Storing energy has its obvious benefits. But so does restricting how much energy is stored. After all, an obese person is at an evoloutionary disadvantage for several reasons: they are less capable of the physical exertion required to obtain food and water, they are more susceptible to disease and predators (including human ones), and they are less desireable to potential mates. Furthermore, a mechanism to stop energy storage needn't be prohibitely complicated. Plenty of things in the body already work within ranges, so there's no reason why fat storage could not.

I think a more likely explanation is simply that the situation which creates an obese person is so incredibly rare (by evolutionary standards) that there hasn't been enough time to create that pressure. Obesity was incredibly rare until industrialization, and that's basically "yesterday" on the evolutionary clock. But the gears are turning now--fatties aren't exactly doing well in the procreation department.

My progress is pretty good, thank you. After the initial water weight "whoosh", I'm down about 20 lbs even in a 5 week period. That's with working a physical job, though. I've also lost significant amounts doing straight CICO, but I gained it back through heavy alcohol abuse combined with lapses in training. In the end, all diets come down to CICO, but there are many routes to achieve this, and keto is a solid one.

I started my initial weight loss at 275 lbs at 5'10". CICO and exercised my way down to 240, and keto has brought me down to 225 since mid to late June.

IDK if I"ll keep it up for longer than I need to, as it might inhibit my Jiu-JItsu and other exercise, but it's hellishly effective for knocking off body fat in my experience. The biggest benefit to me has been the utter lack of sugar cravings. Even when I cheat and go out of keto, it's never with sweets. Usually just pizza and beer.

Ketofags are just as bad as vegans on this board. Fucking cancer can't shut up about their meme diet.

Something I've noticed is that post-surgery and people with medical issues are often told to start a low-carb diet

Why is that?
